ARLINGTON, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's basketball team secured its first win of the season Saturday afternoon, after outlasting Gallaudet University by the score of 78-65.
With the victory, the Panthers jumped to 1-1 overall. For the Bison, they dropped to 0-2.
Outside of the opening three and half minutes, the Blue and Orange led the entire rest of the game as they were not going to let a repeat of the Haverford game happen again.
In the first half, Purchase pushed its lead to as many as 12 points, before settling for a seven-point margin at the halftime break, 41-34.
The action tightened in the second half, as Gallaudet trimmed the deficit to just one point on two occasions. However, the Panthers remained in control and maintained the lead.
During the final minutes of the contest, the Blue and Orange blew the game wide open as they led by as many as 15 points, before settling for a 13-point victory, 78-63.
Overall, the team shot the ball well, finishing with a 41% field goal percentage and an even better 43% on 3-pointers. In the end, big margins in second-chance points (20-9) and fast-break points (17-7) helped lift the Panthers.
Individually,
Mahamadou Nimaga (SR/Bronx, NY) carried PC with a stellar performance, finishing with a game-high 21 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Purchase's other top scorers on the day were
Matthew Phillips (JR/Bronx, NY) and
Raquon Youmans (JR/Brooklyn, NY), who each finished with 10 points.
Up next for the Panthers is the home opener, as the squad welcomes Connecticut College on November 14th at 7 p.m.
