PURCHASE, N.Y. – Farmingdale State pushed a large lead early in the game that would set the Rams on a path to defeat the Purchase College women's basketball team, 77-45, in Skyline Conference play Tuesday evening.
The Panthers (0-9, 0-7 SKY) and Rams (4-4, 2-2 SKY) went toe-to-toe in the opening minutes of action before FSC broke free with nine unanswered points. Purchase freshman
Jaileen Martinez-Gomez (Inwood, NY) halted the run with a jumper in the final minute but Farmingdale's Gemma Pohalski matched the two points with a drive in the paint.
FSC led 17-6 after the first 10 minutes and went on another spree midway through the second quarter. Layla Mendoza fueled the charge with four hoops from the interior and a pair of made free throws to push the Rams to a 38-24 halftime lead.
The visitors continued to heat up after the break, leading by as many as 31 points (57-26) following a Mia Simmons 3-pointer at 2:04.
Purchase freshman
Halle Greaige and sophomore
Charlee Neb (Longmont, CO) cut the deficit down to 28 points with a triple and two made free throws, respectively, but the Panthers still faced a challenging task as they trailed 59-31 heading into the final 10 minutes.
In the fourth quarter, PC connected on 6-of-6 from the charity stripe but shot only 27 percent (4-of-15) from the field, including 0-for-5 from beyond the arc.
The Panthers collected six consecutive points and held the Rams scoreless over the final 2:30 of play. By that point, however, Farmingdale held a comfortable lead and would close the game ahead, 77-45.
Three Rams reached double-digit scoring to lead the charge. Mendoza netted a game-high 28 points and collected seven rebounds, while Taneece Wooden and Simmons notched double-double performances. Wooden tallied 16 points and a game-high 11 boards, while Simmons produced 12 points and 10 rebounds.
For Purchase, Neb collected 14 points, four assists and a pair of steals, while junior guard
