Softball Splits with Bay Path

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Purchase College claimed game two of a non-conference doubleheader, 14-4, after Bay Path University batted in a an 11-7 win in the opener Wednesday afternoon.

The host Panthers (2-9) look to stay in the win column when they return to Skyline Conference play this Saturday at Sarah Lawrence College.

Game One: Bay Path 11, Purchase 7
The visiting Wildcats opened strong, recording unanswered runs in the first and second innings to take a comfortable 6-0 advantage. The team scored again in the top of third but this time, Purchase answered back.

With one out on the board, Tara Sasso (SR/North Rockland, NY) stepped up to the plate and ripped a double down the left field line. Brianna Palermo (SR/Hyde Park, NY) took ball four and later came around to score along with Sasso on a Wildcat error. The pair of unearned runs were followed by an Alexandria Perez (SR/Bronx, NY) 2-RBI double and a Jade D'Errico (JR/Wantagh, NY) RBI single—both to left center field. The Panthers combined for five runs in the inning to shrink Bay Path's lead to two runs (7-5).

Purchase continued to chip away, coming within one run of a tie game (8-7) in the bottom of the fourth on a Malena Santia (FR/Rye, NY) sacrifice flyout to centerfield.

Both teams went scoreless in the fifth before Bay Path batted in a trio of runs in the top of the sixth. Sophomore reliever Grace Ramsey gave up one hit in the bottom of the frame and forced three quick outs in the seventh to secure the 11-7 victory. The performance in the circle earned her the first save of the season, while Wildcat starter Isabelle Ferrara (3-3) recorded the win.

For Purchase, Sasso (1-9) pitched the first 2.2 innings. Palermo came in for relief, recording three strikeouts while giving up four runs (3 ER) on six hits and four walks across 4.1 innings.

Game One: Purchase 14, Bay Path 4
The Panthers regrouped and returned to the diamond fired up for game two. The Purchase offense erupted with six runs in the opening inning thanks to RBI performances from Santia, D'Errico, Sasso and Palermo, respectively.

Purchase struck again in the second with a pair of runs to lead 8-0.

Bay Path finally broke through in the top of the third with two runs, but Purchase silenced the comeback attempt with six runs over the next two innings.

The Wildcats lit up the board with a pair of runs in the fifth but were unable to crawl out of the run-rule deficit as Purchase picked up the win, 14-4, after 4.5 innings of play.

D'Errico batted a flawless 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the charge. Both Perez and Santia went 3-for-4 with doubles and came around to score three runs apiece. Santia led all players with three RBI, while Palermo went 3-for-4 with a double and came around to score twice.

Kelly Jennings (FR/Yorktown Heights, NY) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Rebecca Bronzi (SO/Lagrangeville, NY) and Sasso rounded out the hitting performances with one hit and one RBI apiece.

Sasso returned to the circle for game two, tossing a complete game for the win. The senior ace fanned two of the 23 Wildcat batters, allowing four hits and walking two over 5.0 innings of work.
