PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team cruised to a Skyline Conference win Wednesday afternoon, besting Yeshiva University by the score of 19-4.
With the victory, the Panthers jumped to 12-14 overall and 4-4 in the conference. For the Macs, they dropped to 0-19 and 0-10, respectively. The contest was a make-up for game two of the March 31 doubleheader.
Despite the blowout win, it was actually the guests that got things started with a pair of runs in the first inning.
However, Purchase immediately answered and was off to the races from there, as an RBI-single from
Trevor Zanderzuk (JR/Manorville, NY) and an error allowed two runs to be plated in the bottom of the first.
The guests briefly regained the lead with a run in the second, before the Blue and Orange pulled away.
In the frame, they scored three runs to lead, 5-3. The runs came from a wild pitch, an RBI-single from
Liam Daly (FR/Babylon, NY) and a double steal, in which Zanderzuk stole home.
One inning later, a bases-loaded walk from
Matt Castrogiovanni (FR/Massapequa Park, NY) pushed the margin to 6-3.
Also in the inning, Zanderzuk was hit by a pitch with the bases juiced,
Frank Rega (FR/West Islip, NY) hit an RBI-double, and an error allowed three runs to score, pushing the lead to 11-3.
Yeshiva scored once more in the fourth, before an RBI-groundout from
Jemal Betances (SR/Bronx, NY) in the bottom of the inning got the run right back.
From there, the Panthers added three runs in fifth and four in the sixth to extend the margin to 19-4, where the contest eventually finished.
The hosts finished with 12 hits in the win, as
Louis Carvell (SR/New York, NY),Â
Myles Scarry (JR/Levittown, NY) and Daly each tallied a pair of hits. The latter two, plus Betances, each scored three runs as well.
On the mound, Purchase used five pitchers.
Jonathan Uzzo (FR/Bethpage, NY) earned the start, but lasted just two outs before he was removed.Â
In the end, reliever
Bryan Atkinson (JR/Emerson, NJ) earned the win after going three innings and allowing just one run on three hits. He also struckout three.
Up next for the Panthers is a home doubleheader against the United States Merchant Marine Academy on April 22. First pitch of game one is set for 11 a.m.
