NEW LONDON, CT. – The Purchase College softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader on the road against Mitchell College Thursday afternoon.
The Panthers suffered 9-0 and 0-13 run-rule losses to drop to 6-15 overall, while the host Mariners Wolves advance to 23-15 overall.
Western combined for 19 hits on the day, while limiting Purchase to just one hit in the opener and a hitless game two.
Rookie Panther
Kelly Jennings (FR/Yorktown Heights, NY) recorded the lone hit for PC in the opener—a single to left center in the top of the third inning.
Senior pitcher
Tara Sasso (North Rockland, NY) went 0-2 on the day, tossing a complete-game (4 innings) in the opener and 1.1 innings in the nightcap.
Brianna Palermo (SR/Hyde Park, NY) came in for relief in game two, allowing two runs (0 ER) on three hits and three walks, while striking out one over 2.2 innings of work.
For Mitchell, sophomore Emily Reynolds improved her record to 9-8 on the season after tossing a five inning one-hit shutout, walking just one and striking out five.
Hailey Hill and Olivia DeCicco split time in the second game, combining to throw five innings of no hit ball, with the lone base runner coming via a walk in the top of the fifth.'
Game 1: Mitchell 9, Purchase 0
The Mariners did not wait long to take a lead in the opening game, recording five runs in the bottom of the second inning and plating two more in the third, before adding their final two the following frame.
DeCicco finished 2-2 with a triple, three RBI, and a run scored in the win. Gemma Landry added a double and two RBI for the Mariners, while Emma LaBreck and Madison Nicynski also collected doubles in the nine run output.
Game 2: Mitchell 13, Purchase 0
Mitchell's offense stayed hot in game two, as Nicynski and Brooke Taylor laced RBI doubles in the bottom of the first and Kayla Goins added a run scoring triple in the frame, making it a 5-0 score after one inning. The second inning saw the Mariners push eight runs across the plate en route to the 13-0 win.
Nicynski went 3-3 with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored, while Hannah Lemke and Emma LaBreck also tallied multi-hit games.
Purchase looks to bounce back in the team's return to the diamond this weekend.
