PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College softball team began their final weekend of the season with a pair of losses in a doubleheader matchup against fellow Skyline opponent Mount Saint Mary College.Â
The Panthers were shut out in the first game, 8-0, and would lose the second game, 11-2, despite leading 2-1 into the fifth inning.Â
Senior pitcher Tara Sasso (North Rockland, NY) went 0-2 on the day. She pitched all six innings of the first game and would later pitch 5.1 innings in the second game. Brianna Palermo (SR/Hyde Park, NY) had the most hits in a single game with two in the nightcap.Â
For the Knights, Bridget Morris (9-8) and Grace MacDonald (8-9) would both throw all six innings of their starts, respectively.Â
The Knights' scoring started in the top of the second thanks to a home run by Laura Dentato who would later close the game with three RBIs.
Like Dentato, Samantha Bendig was just as impactful with a three RBI day of her own, which also included a home run.
After the Knights struck first with an RBI single, the Panthers would respond with one run in each of the next two innings to take a 2-1 lead. Alexandria Perez (SR/Bronx, NY) hit an infield single for the Panthers' first run of the game. Kelly Jennings (FR/Yorktown Heights, NY) would follow Perez's lead in the second inning with an RBI single to left field.Â
Sasso managed to escape from trouble in the next two innings as the Knights left a combined five runners stranded.Â
However, it was the next two innings where they woke up in a big way. Both the fifth and sixth innings saw the Knights score five runs each, which was too much for Purchase to overcome.Â
The losses dropped PC's record to 6-21 overall, while the Knights were able to climb back to .500 at 17-17.Â
Purchase will look to conclude their weekend on a strong note with a Senior Day doubleheader against St. Joseph's University on Sunday afternoon.Â
