FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - In the immortal words of the band Thin Lizzy, "The boys are back in town!"
With a 10-6 win over Farmingdale State College in the final game of the regular season, the Purchase College baseball team punched its ticket to the Skyline Conference Playoffs for the first time in nine years Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers, who dropped the opening game of the doubleheader, finished the season 20-19 overall and 11-9 in Skyline Conference games.
With the records, they clinched the No. 6 seed for the playoffs and will now face the No. 3 seeded Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent on May 10 at 7:30 p.m.
For the Rams of Farmingdale, the squad finished the year 17-18 and 9-11, respectively.
Game One: Farmingdale 3, Purchase 2 (7 inn)
Entering the day, the Panthers had to win just one of the two games to seal a spot in the playoffs, while the Rams needed wins in both games to sneak in.
As a result, the action between the two squads was fierce and produced an amazing game beginning to end.
Over the first five and half innings Sunday, both sides were held scoreless as the pitching was paramount. Even when the Rams did finally break the stalemate in the bottom of the sixth, their three runs came off an error and a stolen base.
As for the Panthers, they responded with a pair of runs in the seventh off an RBI-groundout from
Joe Salerno (SO/White Plains, NY) and an RBI-single from
Tristen Abreu (FR/Mineola, NY), but weren't able to conjure the last run needed to extend the game.
Overall, the Blue and Orange had just five hits in game one, with three of them coming from
Frank Rega (FR/West Islip, NY).
On the hill,
Myles Scarry (JR/Levittown, NY) did all he could do in the complete-game loss. He went six innings, struck out five and allowed just one earned run on four hits.Â
Game Two: Purchase 10, Farmingdale 6
With the loss to start the day, game two turned into a must win for the Panthers. The squad quickly rose to the challenge though, as the bats came alive to the tune of 10 runs on 14 hits in the eventual win.
To begin,
Matt Castrogiovanni (FR/Massapequa Park, NY) slapped an RBI-single to get Purchase on the board. The hosts responded with three runs over the first and second innings to lead 3-1 heading into the top of the third.
It was during this frame that the Blue and Orange started to take control, as they put up four runs to grab they lead and never let go.
The first run came via a Reyes RBI-double, before Rega hit a two-run single to extend the margin to 4-1. One batter later, an RBI-single from Abreu grew the lead even further, as the Panthers used the extra breathing room in the end.
In the fourth inning, an error and a pair of RBI-singles pushed the Purchase lead to 8-3 as they began to cruise.
However, the Rams didn't go down without a fight, as they needed a win to seal a playoff birth of their own. The hosts then responded with runs in the fourth and sixth innings, trimming the margin to just three runs, 8-5.
The guests weren't going to be denied though, as they added two more runs over the eighth and ninth innings, as the game eventually settled at a 10-6 scoreline.Â
In the win, Reyes, Rega and Castrogiovanni each recorded three hits apiece to fuel the offense.Â
On the mound,
Justin Doskoez (JR/Eastport, NY) was masterful in long-relief duty. He went 7 1/3 innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits, while striking out two.
Jemal Betances (SR/Bronx, NY) closed out the game by recording the final two outs and in turn, tied the for the Skyline Conference lead in saves with seven on the year.
Up next for the Panthers is the aforementioned First Round of the Skyline Conference Playoffs.
They will be paired against Mount Saint Vincent and play a single elimination contest on May 10 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be played at Maritime College in Throggs Neck, NY.
