Turnovers Loom Large in Loss to MSV

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Carlye Graff scored a team-high 13 points, as the Purchase College women's basketball team came up short at home against the University of Mount Saint Vincent, 79-45, Wednesday evening.

With the loss, the Panthers fell to 0-12 overall and 0-9 in Skyline play, while Mount improved to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the league.

The Dolphins opened the contest with a jumper from Ariella Johnson, but Purchase fired back with a swift 5-0 run behind a pair of Charlee Neb (SO/Longmont, CO) free throws and a 3-point bucket from Jessica McHugh (FR/Ellenville, NY).

A slew of turnovers from both sides would write the script for the minutes to follow before Mount reclaimed the lead (6-5) on a Johnson layup.

The visitors continued to press, scoring 24 points from Purchase's 25 turnovers, resulting in a 42-24 halftime advantage.

Mount stayed hot after the break, shooting a game-best 62.5 percent from the field in the third quarter.

The Dolphins held a comfortable 30-point advantage (65-35) heading into the fourth quarter and would outscore the hosts 14-10 over the final 10 minutes for the win.

Mount was led by sophomore guard Magan Jackson, who amassed a game-high 20 points and five steals. Ariella Johnson was next in line with 14 points and eight rebounds, while JaKaia Lotz finished with 12 points and six boards. Kira Villegas came off the bench to round out the double digit scoring with 10 points.

Graff's 13-point performance led the Panther lineup, whiled Neb chipped in with 10 points and six assists. Halle Greaige paced the board count with seven total.

Purchase shot 26.4 percent from the field (14-for-53), 30.8 percent from 3-point range (4-for-13) and connected on 65 percent of its free throws (13-of-20). Mount shot 41.7 (30-for-72) as a team, netted only 27.3 percent from beyond the arc (3-for-11) and 61.5 percent from the charity line (16-of-26).

Up next, Purchase will travel to Old Westbury, N.Y. for a Skyline contest slated for Saturday at noon.
