Men's Basketball Rolls Past Old Westbury

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's basketball team rolled to a Skyline Conference win Saturday afternoon, besting SUNY Old Westbury by the score of 90-74.

With the win, the Panthers of Purchase moved to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference. For the Panthers of Old Wesbury, they dropped to 0-15 and 0-5, respectively.

While the opening five minutes of the contest saw tight action, the hosts quickly pulled away from their named rival midway through the first half.

After a layup put the guests ahead, 11-10, Purchase responded with a 23-5 run over the next seven minutes to grab the lead, 33-16.

During that stretch, the Blue and Orange nailed five-straight 3-pointers to put together a 15-0 run to all but seal the contest early.

As the first half progressed, the Panthers pushed the lead to as many as 23 points, before settling for a 53-32 halftime advantage.

In the second frame, that margin grew even larger (28 points), as Purchase coasted for much of the 20 minutes.

While the result was never in doubt, Old Westbury did manage to more than halve the deficit to just 13 points late in the period. But the hosts held strong and emerged with the victory in the end.

For the day, the Blue and Orange shot 43.5% overall and 48.5% on 3-pointers. For the guests, they recorded totals of 46.3% and 35%, respectively.

Individually, the Panthers had five players finish with double digits in the win, as Matthew Phillips (JR/Bronx, NY) paced the team with 15 points.

Fellow starters, Rashid Nikiema (SO/Winooski, VT) and Mahamadou Nimaga (SR/Bronx, NY) scored 13 points and 10 points, respectively.

From the bench, Trey Skeete (SO/Brooklyn, NY) totaled 14 points and Oliver Culliton (JR/Boston, MA) added 12 points, as the duo each nailed four 3-pointers on the day.

Up next for Purchase is a return to road Skyline Conference action, as the squad travels to USMMA on January 16th at 7 p.m.
