PURCHASE, N.Y. - Despite a late comeback attempt, the Purchase College men's basketball team ultimately fell to St. Joseph's University-Long Island, 89-82.Â
With the result, both squads now stand at 9-10 overall and 3-7 in the Skyline Conference.
In the first half, the action was back and forth until four minutes remained, where the visitors erupted with a 11-3 run to lead 47-38 at the break.
Following halftime, the Panthers came out strong, chipping away at the Golden Eagles' advantage.
With under 11 minutes to go, Purchase regained its first lead since the first half, thanks to an Oliver Culliton (JR/ Boston, MA) 3-pointer bringing the score to 65-63.
However, the Golden Eagles, unphased, quickly regained and maintained their lead. With under four minutes remaining, Purchase narrowed the score to just two points, before three-straight free throws extended the visitors' margin.
 As a result, Purchase never caught up, ultimately falling 89-82.Â
The Panthers posted shooting totals of 47.7% overall, 41.7% from beyond the arc and 76.9% for free throws. The guests shot 54.8% overall, including 17.6% on 3-pointers and 66.7% from the free-throw line.
Rashid Nikiema (SO/ Winooski, VT) posted a season-high 18 points and seven rebounds, while Chad Duke (JR/ Brooklyn, NY) added 16 points.
Mahamadou Nimaga (SR/Bronx, NY) contributed 13 points and led all players with a game-high 11 rebounds.
Looking ahead, Purchase is set to host Maritime College on January 30th for a 7 p.m. tip-off.Â
