Panthers, Hobart Split Non-Conference Doubleheader

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team split a pair of contests against Hobart College Sunday afternoon, as the Panthers dropped game one, 10-1, before rallying in game two, 8-6.

With the results, the Blue and Orange moved to 4-3 overall. For the Statesmen, they now stand at 3-5 on the season.

Game One: Hobart 10, Purchase 1 (7 inn)

In the opening game, the Panthers were limited at the plate throughout, finishing with just four hits.

Mason Compton (JR/Carmel, NY) provided the team's lone run in the sixth inning, after slapping an RBI-single up the middle.

Before that, the Statesmen tallied the game's first 10 runs as they cruised to the victory.

On the mound, starter Brandon Reybok (SO/Lindenhurst, NY) was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs over 2.1 innings of work.

At the plate, Jemal Betances (6th/Bronx, NY) recorded a single, a walk and a run.

Game Two: Purchase 8, Hobart 6 (7 inn)

While almost nothing went right for the Panthers in game one, game two was a different story ... outside of another quick start for Hobart.

The guests began by scoring five runs over the first three innings to take a commanding lead once again. This time however, Purchase answered the call with a vengeance.

In the bottom of the third, the Blue and Orange responded with back-to-back RBI-doubles from Tyler Della Mura (SO/Rye Brook, NY) and Liam Daly (SO/Babylon, NY) to trim the margin to 5-3.

After the guests scored their sixth run in the fourth, the lead remained in favor of Hobart until the fifth inning, when Purchase exploded at the plate.

In the frame, the hosts totaled five runs to give them the necessary juice to secure the win. The rally started with another RBI-double from Daly, before an RBI-single from Bryant Pena (JR/Queens, NY) trimmed the deficit to 6-5.

Two batters later, Matthew Dragotto (JR/Middle Island, NY) tied the contest with an RBI-groundout, before Tristen Abreu (SO/Mineola, NY) became the hero with a two-run single up the middle.

Now leading by the score of 8-6, the Panthers were tasked with holding onto their lead for six more outs, so they called on Betances to pitch them to victory.

He did just that. Over two innings of work, Betances allowed just one hit and struckout two, including the final batter to secure the win.

In the end, he earned the save, while Justin Doskoez (SR/Eastport, NY) collected the win after tossing two innings of scoreless relief work.

Daly got the start on the mound, going 2.2 innings after allowing five runs and striking out three. He also lead the team on offense with three hits, two RBIs and one run.

Della Mura finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs in the win.

Up next for the Panthers is a few days off, before they travel to SUNY New Paltz for their first road matchup of the year. That doubleheader is scheduled for March 16th at 11 a.m.
