Purchase, John Jay Split Doubleheader

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team split a doubleheader against John Jay College on Sunday afternoon. In game one, the Panthers dominated with a 17-4 victory, before dropping game two, falling 4-11.

With the results, the Blue and Orange moved to 5-6 overall. For the Bloodhounds, they now stand at 5-8 on the season.

Game One: Purchase 17, John Jay 4 (7 inn)

Purchase got on the board first with a fielding error at first base, allowing Myles Scarry (SR/Levittown, NY) to cross home plate and secure the game's opening run. However, John Jay quickly responded with a home run in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the second inning, the Panthers seized the opportunity to break the tie, scoring two runs and taking a 3-1 lead. Brandon Gonzalez (FY/Flushing, NY) kickstarted the rally with a well-placed single to right field. Joe Salerno (JR/White Plains, NY )  then stepped up to the plate and delivered a clutch hit, doubling Gonzalez in. Scarry then executed a sacrifice bunt, advancing Salerno to home.

The visitors then staged an impressive seven-run onslaught in the third inning, significantly widening their lead to 10-1. The offensive surge began with Gonzalez drawing a bases-loaded walk, driving in Liam Daly (SO/Babylon, NY). The highlight of the inning came from Salerno, who delivered a spectacular 0-1 grand slam to left-center field, clearing the bases.

Despite the Bloodhounds managing to tack on a single run, Purchase entered the fourth inning with a commanding 10-2 advantage, firmly in control of the game.

In the top of the fourth, the Panthers continued to pad their lead, with a hit from Jemal Betances (6th/Bronx, NY) allowing Mason Compton (JR/Carmel, NY) to score. Scarry then delivered a powerful blow, connecting on a two-run home run to left-center field, extending the visiting team's lead even further.

Not content with just one home run in the inning, Daly followed suit by launching a two-run blast of his own, propelling Purchase to a 15-2 advantage

The game entered a quieter phase in the fifth and sixth innings, with both teams unable to add any further runs. However, in the final inning, both teams managed to plate two more runs each, bringing the game to a close with a final score of 17-4.

Salerno led the Panthers' offense, with three runs while driving in five RBIs.

Additionally, Scarry, Jared Rosa (FY/Bronx, NY), Daly, and Luke DiLorenzo (SO/New York City, NY) all tallied two hits with Daly and Scarry each bringing in three RBIs.

On the mound, Alex Doskoez (5th/Eastport, NY) earned the win after pitching five innings. He allowed two runs on five hits and recorded two strikeouts.

Game Two: John Jay 11, Purchase 4 (7 inn)

Despite a dominant performance in game one, Purchase faced a tough challenge in game two, ultimately falling to John Jay 11-4.

The Bloodhounds struck first, earning the first run in the bottom of the first.

At the top of the second, the Panthers answered back. Patrick Reyes (SO/Plainedge, NY) singled to shortstop, then stole second and advanced to third on a balk. Frank Rega (SO/West Islip, NY) followed with a single to center field, bringing Reyes home for a run.

John Jay capitalized on a throwing error to gain momentum, scoring four additional runs over the subsequent two innings, thereby extending their lead to 7-1.

In the fourth inning, Purchase fought back as Rega singled to left field, followed by Tristen Abreu's (SO/Mineola, NY) single to left center. Both advanced on a wild pitch, and Tyler Della Mura (SO/Rye Brook, NY) walked. Sam Saltzman's (JR/Old Bethpage, NY) walk brought in a run, and an error by the third baseman allowed two more unearned runs, closing the gap to 7-4.

After a lull in scoring, the bottom of the sixth saw a resurgence from the home team. The Bloodhounds would score two runs before Philip Dragovich (SO/Old Bethpage, NY) relieved John Peteani (JR/Yonkers, NY) on the mound. A subsequent triple brought in another run ending the game 11-4.

Gonzalez took the loss for Purchase, yielding seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and recorded two strikeouts.

Looking ahead, the Panthers are gearing up for a series of games in Florida, with their first matchup scheduled against Worcester State University at Lake Myrtle Sports Park on March 23rd.
