Panthers Split Doubleheader at Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Purchase College softball team split games in their matchup against Brooklyn College on Wednesday night.

The Blue and Orange now sit at 2-5 overall while the Bulldogs moved to 3-3.

Game One: Brooklyn 7, Purchase 4  (7 inn)

Brooklyn College set the tone for game one by scoring the first four runs before Samantha Christopher (FY/North Babylon, NY) singled to carry Maria Konieczny (FY/Hadley, MA) to home for the Panthers first run of the night at the top of the fourth.

The Bulldogs were unfazed and scored three more runs over the next two innings bringing the score to 7-1.

At the top of the top of the sixth the Blue and Orange found a groove as Kelly Jennings (SO/Yorktown Heights, NY) doubled, followed by Christopher's homer, narrowing the score gap to 7-3. Despite the home run, Purchase couldn't overtake Brooklyn.

In the final inning, Katherine Combe (JR/Brooklyn, NY) managed to score on an error by the shortstop, but a groundout by Devynn Hernandez (FY/Ossining, NY) ended game one with a final score of 7-4.

The Panthers finished with seven hits with Christopher leading the charge with three hits, three RBIs and one run.

On the mound, Olivia Goff (FY/Syracuse,NY) was tagged with the loss after pitching five innings. She allowed seven runs on six hits, had six errors and four strikeouts. Her record is now 1-2.

Game Two: Purchase 12, Lehman 9

Game two presented a stark contrast for Purchase as they surged ahead, scoring 10 runs over three innings before the home team could respond.

At the top of the first, the Panthers capitalized on errors made by the Bulldogs to score the first three runs. Jade D'Errico's (SR/Wantagh, NY) aggressive baserunning set up a scoring opportunity as she reached third on a passed ball. Subsequent errors allowed D'Errico, Goff and Katie Straub (FY/Lynbrook, NY)  to score, 3-0.

The second inning saw Tyler Salerno (FY/Kings Park, NY) capitalize on an error by the right fielder, stealing second base and ultimately scoring on an error by the first baseman. Christopher doubled and then advanced to third on a wild pitch before D'Errico drove her in with a groundout to second base.

Purchase College ignited a five-run rally in the top of the third. Straub capitalized on an error by the center fielder to kick off the inning, eventually scoring on Rebecca Bronzi's (Lagrangeville, NY) single. Errors continued to plague Brooklyn as Melissa Harper (FY/Patchogue, NY) reached base and subsequently stole second, leading to further unearned runs for Purchase. Salerno doubled advancing Combe to third, before Konieczny singled allowing Combe to score. A wild pitch brought Salerno and Konieczny home setting a 10 run lead.

The Bulldogs would fight back over the next two innings scoring six runs on some fielding errors and a wild pitch to narrow the margin 10-6.

The Panthers quickly regrouped and tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, maintaining their lead. Despite Brooklyn managing to score one run in the bottom of the sixth, the score stood at 12-7

The decisive moment arrived in the seventh inning to determine the game's outcome. Purchase, unable to score, turned to Straub to close the game, and she delivered  Despite conceding two runs, Straub struck out the final batter, prompting her team to rush onto the field to celebrate a 12-9 victory.

Salerno led the team with three runs while Konieczny and Straub contributed two runs apiece.

On the mound, Straub (1-1) pitched all seven innings where she allowed nine runs on 11 hits and had three strikeouts.

Up next, the Blue and Orange will face York College on their home field March 22nd at 3 p.m.
