PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team began Skyline Conference play with a pair of wins Saturday afternoon, besting The College at Old Westbury by the scores of 15-3 and 9-5.
With the results, the Panthers are now 10-9 overall and 2-0 in the conference. For the guests, they dropped to 8-10 and 4-2, respectively.
Game One: Purchase 15, Old Westbury 3 (7 inn)
The opening game was all Blue and Orange, as the hosts ended up scoring the first 14 runs en route to the big win.
A two-run triple from
Liam Daly (SO/Babylon, NY) got things started in the first inning, before
Tyler Della Mura (SO/Rye Brook, NY) added another run off an RBI-single.
One frame later,
Patrick Reyes (SO/Plainedge, NY) hit an RBI-single of his own to extend the margin to 4-0.
The fourth inning saw the biggest fireworks of the day, as the Panthers scored six runs, before adding four more in the fifth.
The hosts finished with 15 runs on 15 hits in the victory, as Della Mura tallied two hits, four RBIs and one run.
Brandon Gonzalez (FY/Flushing, NY),
Joe Salerno (JR/White Plains, NY),
Frank Rega (SO/West Islip, NY) and Reyes all each added two hits apiece in the effort.
On the mound,
Myles Scarry (SR/Levittown, NY) tossed a complete game, as he allowed three runs on eight hits over his seven innings of work. He also fanned nine in the win.Â
Game Two: Purchase 9, Old Westbury 5
While the first game was a breeze, game two was a fight for the Blue and Orange, as they had to rally late to collect the win.
Despite the comeback effort, it was Purchase that scored first as
Jemal Betances (6th/Bronx, NY) and
Tristen Abreu (SO/Mineola, NY) drove in runs in the second inning for a 2-0 lead.
The lead was short lived though, as a three-run homer in the top of the third gave the guests their first advantage of the day.
One half inning later, the Panthers managed to bring the score level at 3-all thanks to an Old Westbury error.
The fourth saw the guests jump back in front, 5-3, before Rega halved that margin in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.
The score remained 5-4 heading into the seventh, until Betances hit an RBI-single to notch the tying run.
However, the winning blow came one inning later, when the Panthers tallied four runs, three of which came via errors.
In total, the hosts finished with 10 hits as Daly, Rega and Betances each recorded multi-hit games.
On the mound,
Alex Doskoez (5th/Eastport, NY) went five innings in the no-decision start. He allowed five runs on 10 hits, while striking out six.
Instead,
Justin Doskoez (SR/Eastport, NY) earned the win in relief, after he struckout out four over two innings of shutout baseball.Â
Up next for the Panthers is a return to non-conference action, as the squad travels south to face New Jersey City University on April 2nd at 3:30 p.m.
