PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College softball team endured defeat against SUNY Old Westbury during Saturday afternoon's doubleheader.
With the results, the Blue and Orange dropped to 9-16 overall and 5-7 in conference action, while the Old Westbury Panthers advanced to 19-7 and 7-5, respectively.
Game One: Old Westbury 8, Purchase 0 (5 inn)
Old Westbury took command from the outset, swiftly establishing a lead with six runs in the opening inning, placing Purchase in a position of playing catch-up.
Although the Panthers managed to hold off Old Westbury in the following two innings, they struggled to generate scoring opportunities of their own.
The home team sealed the game with two additional runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, thwarting the Blue and Orange's final attempt to get on the scoreboard, ultimately concluding the game after five innings.
Melissa Harper (FY/Patchogue, NY) managed the only two hits of the game for Purchase.
Abigail Lipkin (SO/Bethlehem, PA) took the loss on the mound, bringing her record to 1-6, after conceding eight runs on eight hits, with one strikeout.
Game Two: Old Westbury 11, Purchase 0 (5 inn)
The Panthers of Old Westbury carried their power from the first game into the second and scored the first run in the bottom of the first.
Purchase struggled to mount its offense, while the home team exploded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring 10 runs to seal the victory, 11-0.
At bat, Samantha Christopher's (FY/North Babylon, NY) recorded two hits, while Kelly Jennings (SO/Yorktown Heights, NY) contributed one.
On the mound, Christopher (3-2) pitched 3.1 innings surrendering seven runs on six hits, with one strikeout, before Katie Straub (FY/Lynbrook, NY) took over, allowing four runs on four hits.
With a quick turnaround, the Blue and Orange will host St. Joseph's University-Brookly on April 28th for another doubleheader, with the first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
