FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team had its 2024 season come to a close Wednesday evening, falling to Farmingdale State College in the First Round of the Skyline Conference Playoffs, 12-0.
With the result, the No. 5 seeded Panthers finished the season 20-20 overall. For the No. 4 seeded Rams, they moved to 21-13 and into the Semifinals at St. Joseph's University-Long Island this weekend.
While the end score was a decisive win for the hosts, for much of the contest, especially the early portions, the action played out quite close between the two sides.
In the first inning, Farmingdale notched a run on an RBI-groundout to strike first. But from there, things went quiet until the fourth, as the Rams knocked in another run to double the margin, 2-0.
In-between those two scores, the Panthers put two runners in scoring position but were unable to plate either.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the sixth inning came and changed everything for both sides. Purchase was up first, as it looked to get on the board.
Brandon Gonzalez (FR/Flushing, NY) got on early and eventually advanced to third base, as
Tyler Della Mura (SO/Rye Brook, NY) then drew a walk to put two runners on.
The momentum was slowly building for the squad, as it felt like the changing tide was coming. But in the end, a hard lineout to right field was caught, dashing the Panthers' hopes.
That notion magnified exponentially in the bottom half of the frame, as Farmingdale came to bat and blew the game wide open with nine runs.
In the end, the hosts added one more run in the eighth to push the lead to 12-0, where it eventually finished.
While the result wasn't the expected nor wanted outcome, it did allow head coach
Adam Taraska to sub in/out his graduating seniors to standing ovations from the Panther faithful one final time.
The Blue and Orange finished with four hits in the effort, as Gonzalez,
Liam Daly (SO/Babylon, NY),
Sam Saltzman (JR/Old Bethpage, NY) and
Jemal Betances (6th/Bronx, NY) each recorded singles.
On the mound,
Myles Scarry (SR/Levittown, NY) received the loss after going 5.2 innings in his final start. He allowed nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits, while striking out four.
For the Panthers, the 20 wins mark just the third time in program history they have reached that many wins in a season (2013, 2023), while the 12 Skyline Conference wins tied for the second-most ever for the Blue and Orange.
Purchase College baseball will return to action in March 2025.
