BANG! BANG!: Duke's OT Buzzer Beater Propels Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. - Nerves of steel ... meet Chad Duke.

Duke (JR/Brooklyn, NY) played the role of hero Saturday afternoon, as he sent the Purchase College men's basketball team to a rousing victory after nailing a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to best Farmingdale State College in overtime, 67-65.

The contest had it all - 13 lead changes, 11 tie scores and an extra five minutes of action. And yet after all that, it still came down to a final chance anyways.

Purchase had the ball during the final 10 seconds after the Rams completed an and-1 to put them ahead by a single point.

From there, the Blue and Orange inbounded and we were off.

While the guests initially locked down Trey Skeete (JR/Brooklyn, NY) at the 3-point line, he found Duke curling around him with about three seconds to go.

Following a screen from Skeete, Duke's defender switched off and he was matched up with a new man.

As he rounded the turn, the slight spacing created was just enough for the guard to unleash a shot from about 30-feet out at the top of the arc.

Duke banked the chance in dead center as the horn sounded. He was then promptly mobbed by teammates and coaches alike as the Purchase faithful exploded in cheers.

The win over the defending Skyline Conference Champions was the hosts' first against the Rams since 2020.

With the finish, the Blue and Orange are now 9-8 overall and 5-3 in the league. For the guests, they moved to 9-8 and 6-2, respectively.

Overall, the Panthers shot 41% from the field and 32.4% from long range. Farmingdale finished with lower percentages but helped split the difference with an edge on rebounds (45-33), especially offensive boards (14-6).

In the opening half, the guests enjoyed the biggest led at six points, carrying a 30-24 margin into halftime.

Once the second half began though, it was the Blue and Orange who paced play with a dominant stretch. Over the first eight plus minutes, they outscored the Rams, 22-5, to leap in front, 46-35.

Now ahead by double digits with 11:35 remaining, it looked like Purchase would cruise.

However, Farmingdale showed why it is the defending champ, as it embarked on a 15-0 run to lead 50-46 with just over six minutes to go.

Over the rest of the half, the two sides traded punches until they went ice cold from the field over the final 90 seconds to force OT.

In the extra period, neither side lead by more than three points as it all eventually came down to the final possession and an outstanding shot.

Individually, Skeete led the Panthers with 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Rashid Nikiema (JR/Winooski, VT) added 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while Gabe Bristow (JR/Poughkeepsie, NY) and Matthew Phillips (DR/Bronx, NY) each tallied 12 points.

Up next for the Panthers is a return to Skyline road action, as the squad travels to Maritime College on January 29th at 1 p.m.
