NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's basketball team had its season come to an end Tuesday night, as the Panthers were defeated in the Skyline Conference Quarterfinals against Yeshiva University.
The final score was 88-59, as the hosts blew the game open late.
With the result, the Blue and Orange finished off the year 14-12 overall, while the Macs move onto the semifinals with a record of 16-10.
In the first half, the guests controlled the action early as they raced out to 9-2 and 11-4 leads over the first three minutes.
However, just as quickly as Purchase grabbed the margin, Yeshiva answered right back by tying the contest up at 11-all just two minutes later.
From there, two sides traded baskets before the hosts took the lead with 10:56 remaining in the opening frame. They never trailed again.
Over the rest of the period, the two sides kept things within striking distance, until a late run and a half court 3-pointer as the halftime horn sounded put the Macs ahead by 14 points, 43-29.
Despite the large deficit, the Panthers came out fighting in the second half. During the opening seven minutes of the frame, they managed to trim the contest to just four points, 51-47.
However, that was as close as the game got the rest of the way, as the Panthers suddenly went ice cold from the field and the Macs couldn't miss.
In the end, the hosts prevailed and Purchase left the floor knowing it had left it all on the court.
Overall, the Blue and Orange struggled offensively as they shot just 37.3% from the field and 26.3% from long range.
While Yeshiva wasn't significantly better shooting the ball, the hosts did easily outpace the guests in rebounds (49-32), made free throws (22-10) and second chance points (19-6) to secure the victory.
Individually,
Chad Duke (SR/Brooklyn, NY) closed out his career with a team-high 22 points and three rebounds, while classmate
Matthew Phillips (SR/Bronx, NY) ended his Purchase tenure with 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Panthers will return to the court for the 2025-26 season in November.
