BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's volleyball team earned its second win in the last week against St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn Tuesday night, besting the Skyline Conference foe in straight sets.
Scores for the contest were 25-20, 25-17 and 25-22. When these teams played on February 28th at Purchase, the Blue and Orange prevailed by the total of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-17.Â
With the win, the Panthers moved to 10-9 overall and 3-1 in the league. For the Bears, they dropped to 1-6 and 0-3, respectively.
On the night, the guests used big runs to create the needed separation between themselves and St. Joseph's. In the opening set, Purchase enjoyed a 9-1 run to win the frame, turning a 19-16 deficit into a 25-20 victory.
Set two saw the Panthers embark on a 12-1 run midway through to give them all the cushion they needed. Finally, in the last frame, the guests scored 10 straight points to flip the script in the stanza and eventually earn the match win.
Overall, the Panthers hit .192 with 38 kills in the effort, compared to Brooklyn's totals of .117 and 29, respectively.
Individually,
Channing Williams (SO/Neptune, NJ) paced all players with 15.5 points, including 12 kills and three aces. He also totaled a match-high 13 digs.
Hector Ruiz (FY/Bronx, NY) chipped in a career-best 11 kills, while
Ayden Mercado (FY/Brooklyn, NY) finished with 35 assists and seven digs.
Up next for the Panthers is the only home tri-match of the year, as the squad welcomes New Jersey City University and Mount Saint Vincent on March 7th. Purchase will play at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. with the neutral-site game taking place between.
