Purchase Prevails on Senior Day

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College women's basketball team earned a big win Saturday afternoon to not only bolster their playoff chances, but also celebrate their two seniors for Senior Day.

In the end, the hosts topped their Skyline Conference rivals, Sarah Lawrence College, by the score of 67-60.

With the win, the Panthers moved to 11-13 overall and 10-9 in the league. For the Gryphons, they dropped to 13-11 and 10-9, respectively.

Before the contest began, the squad took a few moments to celebrate seniors, Charlee Neb (Longmont, CO) and Jaileen Martinez-Gomez (Inwood, NY). The team gave them gifts as they celebrated and posed for photos at mid-court with family and friends to commemorate the day.

Following the ceremony, the team quickly shifted to the task at hand - beating Sarah Lawrence. During the first half, the two sides played to a dead even score of 23-all, before the Blue and Orange edged ahead in third quarter.

Entering the fourth, the margin was just three points, 46-43, as the hosts continued to lead.

While the margin was trimmed to just two points, the Panthers held firm and responded to extend their lead to as many as 11 points in the frame. In the end, they settled for a seven-point victory in a crucial matchup.

With the win, the Panthers remain in the hunt for the final playoff spot.

Overall, Purchase shot 37.5 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from long range. For Sarah Lawrence, it compiled totals of 30.4 percent and 27.8 percent, respectively.

Bench points were a huge factor in the victory, as they favored the Panthers, 35-2.

Individually, Tianna Patten (FY/Mount Vernon, NY) finished with a team-high 12 points and three rebounds in just 13 minutes.

Neb and Halle Greaige (JR/Rye Brook, NY) each finished with 10 points apiece, while Martinez-Gomez collected three points and a rebound.

Up next for the squad is the season finale as they host Farmingdale State College on February 18th at 6 p.m.
