Purchase, NY
(Oct. 11, 2011) – Purchase's fabulous No. 1 doubles tandem of
Moriah Ormsby and
Gabriella Marden set the tone early Tuesday evening, recording one of the team's three doubles wins and later each adding a singles victory apiece as the host Panthers cruised 8-1.
The Panthers were no match for visiting non-conference rival Sarah Lawrence (5-3), one of the most prestigious colleges in the conference that also has a knack for strong tennis teams. This fall is no different as the Gryphons came into the contest at 5-2 overall, including 2-1 in their league, the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference.
Purchase improved to 5-3 with the victory. Ormsby (SO/Montebello, NY) and Marden (SO/Bayside, NY), both of which were named to the Skyline Conference Honor Roll for women's tennis player of the week over the course of the last two weeks, won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. The dynamic duo bested Gwen Adorno and Antonia Verdi. Ormsby, who was named to the league HR last week, would later earn a 5-1, retired win against Kayla Pincus at No. 2 singles.
Marden, who was named to the league HR this week, earned a 6-0, 7-5 win, downing Adorno at No. 1 singles.
The Panthers kept rolling from there. The underrated combo of
Melissa Siller (FR/Roslyn Heights, NY) and
Ashley Bernhardt (SO/Bethpage, NY) teamed for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles before
Alyson Lopez (SR/Brooklyn, NY) and
Michelle Gil (SR/Valley Stream, NY) paired for an 8-0 victory at No. 3.
Purchase closed out the doubles with a commanding 3-0 lead. After taking the first two singles matches, the Panthers sealed the deal with wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5. Siller won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3; Bernhardt also was perfect on the evening, winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4; and Lopez earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5, joining her five teammates in going 2-0 on the night between singles and doubles play.
The Panthers will now look to climb the conference standings when they travel to the Sage Colleges Thursday afternoon for another key conference match. Purchase is currently 1-1 in league play.
