(Sept. 12, 2011) – Women's tennis dominated host Western Connecticut State University Monday, posting an 8-0 clean sweep of the Colonials in their home opener.
The trip marked the first time the Panthers held serve at WestConn. The Colonials play in the Little East Conference and are under the direction of their new head coach, Kelly Niznansky.
Nonetheless, that didn't stop Purchase from sweeping the match, with one and two doubles dropping only one game apiece and seniors
Alyson Lopez (SR/Brooklyn, NY) and
Michelle Gil (SR/Valley Stream, NY) winning 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Ashley Bernhardt (SO/Bethpage, NY) and
Moriah Ormsby (SO/Montebello, NY) were the first two off the court at the fifth and second doubles spots, respectively, both winning with double bagel sets.
With the match decided, having won the five other singles, Lopez split sets having played a tie breaker in both, and had to leave the match tied due to the lateness of the hour.
“I would have liked to finish,” Lopez said as she came off the court.
“It was exciting to watch Alyson win the tiebreaker for the first set,” said Purchase
head coach Patricia Troiano.
“And it would have been nice to see her finish the third. Unfortunately we couldn't allow it, but the team was confident she would have done well. She put up a good fight at the end.”
The Panthers' next match will be another non-conference tilt. Purchase (2-1) will travel up the road to battle rival Manhattanville on Sept. 20.
