(Sept. 25, 2011) – Purchase College women's tennis dropped an 8-1 decision Sunday at Union College, falling to non-conference Plattsburgh State.
Plattsburgh split a pair of matches over the weekend against Union College and Purchase. The Cardinals stumbled on Saturday against Union, falling 6-3, but rebounded on Sunday with an 8-1 win over Purchase to improve to 5-5 on the year.
Though the Panthers suffered their largest defeat of the season thus far, Purchase did not feel inclined to hang its heads Sunday, coming back from the road trip.
“The other coach even said to me,” explained Purchase
head coach Patricia Troiano to her team before heading home, “the scores don't always reflect what happened on the courts.”
Coach and players alike were proud of their effort, though the scores may suggest otherwise.
After dropping No. 1 doubles, the second and third doubles spots fought hard to come from behind, both ultimately losing at 8-6.
Playing midday in the Schenectady heat wave, No. 1 singles
Gabriella Marden (SO/Bayside, NY) suffered a delay of game due to fatigue, but carried on in her first loss of the season, 6-1, 6-0 against Plattsburgh's Rachel Hodnett. No. 3 singles player,
Melissa Siller (FR/Roslyn Heights, NY), also had her first defeat of the season – 6-1, 6-1.
The only win the team managed to pull from the Plattsburgh Cardinals was at No 5. Singles,
Alyson Lopez (SR/Brooklyn, NY) earned the win. She won 6-4, 6-4. The team captain is back in top flight form after an upsetting draw during her last match at Western Connecticut.
The Panthers are now 2-2 following a pair of postponed matches due to inclement weather. This week, the team will travel to Brooklyn College on Wednesday, and then host Mount Saint Mary at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
