(Jan. 14, 2012) – The Purchase College men's and women's basketball team lost both ends of a hoops doubleheader Saturday at the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
The women were defeated 61-38. The men fell 80-61.
CMSV's Kara McNish came up one point shy of her career-high and Desiree Rosa scored a season-high 13 points as the host Dolphins snapped a four-game losing streak and earned their first league win of the season on the women's side.
In the women's matchup, Mount Saint Vincent led wire-to-wire on Saturday and used a dominant first half to cruise. The Dolphins opened the game on a 20-5 run and took a commanding 29-13 lead into the intermission.
The Dolphins held Purchase to just 21.4-percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes and the Mount defense forced 17 Purchase turnovers on its way to 18 points off of miscues.
McNish finished off the game 7 for 14 from the floor and 4 for 6 from the free-throw line on her way to a game-high 18 points. She also picked up her team leading fourth double-double of the season after securing a game-high 14 rebounds.
McNish rounded out a strong all-around afternoon with three assists and three blocked shots. Rosa came off the bench to net 13 points in the contest after knocking in three of her five three-point field goals and going a perfect 4 for 4 from the free-throw line. Rosa also secured four rebounds for the Mount and handed out four assists.
The Panthers were led by
Alyssa Guido (SR/Cliffside Park, NJ) and her 11 points. She also swiped five steals.
In the men's final, Stephen Oliver knocked down a career-high six 3-pointers on his way to a career-best 25 points as the Dolphins snapped a nine-game home losing streak with a convincing 80-61 victory over the Panthers.
After captain
B.J. Warrington (SR/Bronx, NY) gave the Panthers a 10-9 lead in the early going on Saturday, Cody Gauvard answered with a three-point play at the 12:08 mark to push the Mount in front to stay at 12-10. The Gauvard three-point play started a 12-0 run for the Dolphins that was keyed by 6-for-7 shooting from the free-throw line, including 3 of 4 from Oliver.
The Mount pulled in front 21-10 after two Shaquille Cunningham conversions from the free-throw line and would not allow Purchase closer then 10 points the rest of the afternoon. Oliver knocked in two of his six triples in the final two minutes of the first half to send the Dolphins to the break with a 37-21 lead.
Oliver recorded a season-high with 15 points before the break after going 4 of 5 from behind the arc and 3 of 4 from the charity stripe. He played a big role in the Dolphins shooting just under 63-percent from long distance in the opening 20 minutes.
The Dolphins maintained their comfortable advantage coming out of halftime and jumped out in front by 21 following another Oliver trey with 13:30 to play. Gauvard would knock down a jumper with just under seven minutes left to give the Dolphins their largest lead of the day at 70-44.
Lost in defeat was the play of
Justin Person (JR/Greenburgh, NY), who scored a team-leading 19 for the Panthers. He also grabbed 12 rebounds in a solid double-double effort.
Purchase will look to bounce back on Tuesday as the men's and women's teams return to action. The men will be at Mount Saint Mary, while the women will host MSMC at 6 p.m. The men's game tips at 7 in Newburgh, NY.
