(Oct. 11, 2012) – Women's tennis rebounded nicely from a defeat last time out by capturing a 7-2 victory over non-conference foe Sarah Lawrence Thursday night at home.
Previously topped by conference rival St. Joseph's-LI last time out, the Panthers regrouped and swept the doubles tonight, starting 3-0 in a match that was eventually pushed into super tiebreakers in the singles, with the hosts already in the win column. In the victory, Purchase improved to 6-2 overall, dropping SLC to 4-4 on the fall. Their rivalry dates back to the days when both programs were members of the Hudson Valley Conference. Today, SLC is still in the HVC, but the Panthers have moved on to play in two conferences since, now residing in the Skyline Conference.
Nonetheless, the neighboring rivalry continues today as a non-conference battle, with Sarah Lawrence, an elite program from Bronxville, and Purchase, always on the up-and-up in women's tennis, looking forward to the annual affair.
The highly anticipated contest started in doubles and the Panthers were more than up to the task.
Moriah Ormsby (JR/Montebello, NY) and
Ashley Bernhardt (JR/Bethpage, NY) delivered an 8-0 shutout at first doubles.
Melissa Siller (SO/Roslyn Heights, NY) and partner
Chelsea Quinn (JR/Southold, NY) teamed for an 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. The tandem of
Lilly Murray (JR/New Canaan, CT) and
Jasmine Rippey (FR/Deansboro, NY) completed the sweep in an 8-2 final at No. 3.
Ormsby continued her stellar evening in a 6-2, 6-0 final against SLC's Nora Landes at first singles. Siller kept up the trend at No. 2, posting a clean sweep – 6-0, 6-0 in topping Maddy Dessanti.
Bernhardt won 6-2, 10-8 in the super tiebreaker at No. 3 and Quinn downed Lane Garber in straight sets at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0). The Gryphons earned wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. An injury to Rippey called the final singles match in the last tiebreaker, giving SLC the victory by retirement.
Tennis is back in action Saturday at Mount Saint Mary.
