(Oct. 24, 2012) – No. 4 Purchase gave a valiant effort in the Skyline Conference Women's Tennis Semifinals Wednesday night at top-seeded Mount Saint Mary.
A handful of obstacles, including injuries and some other off-the-court concerns, didn't help the Panthers in their quest for a title game berth, but Purchase played well despite the challenges. MSMC would go on to win 6-0.
The Knights took the three doubles matches and the remainder of the singles matches before it was decided.
“
Moriah Ormsby and
Ashley Bernhardt led the Panthers in a strong fight at first doubles,” said Purchase
head coach Patricia Troiano. “They stayed neck-and-neck with MSMC's No. 1 doubles combo and even matched the score at 4-4. They had a battle in the final few games, losing just shy of a point or two in each.
“Bernhardt had a great singles match, going up early in the first set 6-3,” Troiano continued, explaining the play of her co-captain. “Unfortunately she could not finish her match once the overall match was decided.
“Despite having to play up one and in some cases, two positions, due to the end of season injury loss of No. 1 singles player
Ana Stan, and No. 4 singles player,
Chelsea Quinn, who was out due to an unfortunate family matter the day of the semifinal match, the Panthers played exceptionally well,” she added. “They have nothing to hang their heads about. It was another successfully return to the semifinals and placing in the top four teams for the Skyline Conference.”
