(Sept. 11, 2012) – Women's tennis returned to the win column Tuesday night at home. A match after falling to Bard on the road over the weekend, the Panthers resumed their stellar ways in a sharp 7-2 non-conference victory against visiting John Jay.
In the process, the Panthers improved to 2-1 on the early season, dropping the Bloodhounds to 0-2. Doubles yielded a sweep and a quick 3-0 margin. No. 1 tandem of
Moriah Ormsby (JR/Montebello, NY) and
Ashley Bernhardt (JR/Bethpage, NY) shutout John Jay's top pair, 8-0, and
Melissa Siller (SO/Roslyn Heights, NY) and
Chelsea Quinn (JR/Southold, NY) followed suit in similarly impressive, winning second-doubles 8-1.
Kim Whitehead (SR/Ronkonkoma, NY) and
Jasmine Rippey (FR/Deansboro, NY) closed out the doubles in another sharp outing, taking the match, 8-2.
Singles saw victories from Purchase at No. 1, No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6. The bottom of the order was quite impressive as Whitehead dominated at No. 5, downing Denise Batista 6-1, 6-3, and
Angelica Pina (SO/Bronx, NY) won 6-0, 6-1. Ormsby won first-singles in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) and her doubles partner, Bernhardt, added a straight set win at No. 2 (6-0, 6-0).
John Jay captured a pair of singles win at No. 3 and No. 4.
The Panthers will look to make it two straight on Thursday at home when they welcome WestConn for a 7 p.m. match.
