Purchase, NY (Oct. 24, 2013) – Purchase women's tennis carved up a 5-1 semifinal win Thursday to advance to the Skyline Conference Championship at No. 1 Farmingdale State Saturday.
The second-seeded Panthers were too much for No. 3 Sage, jumping out to a 3-0 margin after doubles.
Emma Yavel (FR/Brooklyn, NY) and Lilly Murray (SR/New Canaan, CT) sealed the win by taking their singles matches. Yavel bested Katie Schultz 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and Murray handed Shanessa Mendoza a 6-1, 6-2 final at No. 6.
Purchase's top tandem of Angela Assal (FR/Bronx, NY) and Katherine Coleman (JR/Dewittville, NY) teamed for an 8-6 win at first doubles. Jasmine Rippey (SO/Deansboro, NY) and Erika Fulton (FR/Wallingford, CT) followed with an 8-5 win at No. 2 and Yavel and Juliette Ferraro (SO/Northport, NY) sealed the doubles sweep by winning 8-1 at No. 3.
Sage is eliminated from the postseason and finishes with a record of 8-6. Purchase is now 8-2 on the season, including the playoff win. The Panthers topped Farmingdale last year in the semifinals, but fell to MSMC in the championship.
The two teams will renew their rivalry in the finale Saturday. FSC won the regular-season matchup and hold the top seed in the playoff bracket this year.
