Purchase, NY
(Oct. 24, 2015) – With friends and family present at midfield for a memorable pregame ceremony, the Panthers recognized nine seniors on Senior Day Saturday.
Presnel Dalmeus (SR/Suffern, NY),
Uriel Milechberg Chirom (SR/Buenos Aires, Agentina),
Esteban Aguilar (SR/East Hampton, NY),
Edel Fernandez (SR/New City, NY),
Wil Kauffman (SR/Broomall, PA),
Nick Ishoo (SR/Broomall, PA),
Tim Rera (SR/Cornwall, NY),
Myles Clohessy (SR/Cornwall, CT) and
Samvara Anello (SR/Bali, Indonesia) were celebrated in a brief pregame that was MCed by
Sports Information Director Bobby Ciafardini and included gifts from the coaching staff and certificates of appreciation from the SID office. The nine seniors will also be recognized during the program's annual awards banquet in April. As part of the festivities, the Panthers and
head coach James Bruno also highlighted the six seniors on the Maritime roster.
Ciafardini said, "Dalmeus has shown a strong leg as an additional forward to the roster. Coach Bruno says, "He has been a positive influence on the team with his upbeat personality."
The other eight members were all part of the team's championship run in 2014. Senior goalkeeper Milechberg Chirom came to us by way of Argentina. "He is a three-year member of the varsity squad and has been a great addition, on and off the field," Ciafardini said. "He boasts a 3.72 GPA and is a top student-athlete, who is also one of the program's top student workers."
Starting goalie Aguilar transferred in from Keystone College and has been a key player for the Panther program. A former All-Skyline selection, he won eight games, with a 1.82 goals against average en route to the championship last fall – an impressive 2-1 win over St. Joseph's-LI.
Fernandez, Ishoo and Kauffman followed. Fernandez was recognized for his defensive play after transferring to Purchase from Rockland Community College. Kauffman, a high soccer IQ player who also sports a 3.9 GPA in the classroom, was celebrated for his defense and smart play, while Ishoo has brought a "steady and calm presence to the midfield and forward positions," Ciafardini said of Bruno's assessment of the senior.
The final three seniors, Rera, Clohessy and Anello, are all captains and were honored as a trio. Ciafardini said: "Rera is a three-year player and an integral part of the midfield. After transferring to us by way of Ulster Community College, he scored two goals in 2013, but suffered a season-ending injury last fall. Nonetheless, he was a vocal presence during the championship run. He has bounced back from that season-ending injury to log a lot of minutes in the midfield this year.
"Clohessy, our next captain, is a three-year contributor at multiple positions, from forward to defender, stepping up for coach Bruno in whatever role has been asked of him. He is a former All-Skyline selection, who scored four goals and handed out three assists last fall following a season in which he scored seven goals. His parents are our No. 1 fans and the Clohessy family, especially Myles, will be missed."
Anello was the final senior called on Senior Day. "The workhorse, as coach Bruno describes, has been an integral part of the program," Ciafardini said on the PA. "He puts the program first and is a quiet leader."
The ceremony set the stage for a thrilling game between Maritime and Purchase. The Panthers and Privateers played to a regulation stalemate, with Aguilar making two incredible saves at 6:20 left in the second period to preserve the scoreless tie.
Maritime standout Sheick Wattara nearly ended the game on a fastbreak in the final seconds of regulation, but his shot went wide, sending the game into overtime. Aguilar, backed by the Panther defense, played an extraordinary game.
Maritime's defense was equally stingy. However, the Privateers found the goal that both teams were looking for in the 95th minute as Wattara was able to put home a shot attempt in the extra session to seal the 1-0 OT win for the visitors.
