(Dec. 4, 2015) – Women's basketball went toe-to-toe with the College of New Rochelle Friday night at the Wellness Center, but the host Blue Angels managed to put some distance between them and the Panthers in the second half en route to a 59-53 win.
For Purchase (0-7), senior
Elizabeth Osowiecki (Franklin Sqaure, NY) tallied a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds. Juniors
Allison Haugh (New City, NY) and
Sierra Sangetti-Daniels (Oneonta, NY) also finished the evening with double-digit scoring efforts. Haugh tallied 16 points, five rebounds and a team-high four assists, while Sangetti-Daniels netted 11 points and seven rebounds.
In the first quarter, New Rochelle (4-6) jumped out to a 9-4 lead, including four points by senior Jasmine Brandon. Purchase fought back, scoring the next 11 points to take a 15-9 advantage. Senior JaNasha King made a three-pointer to tie the score in the first minute of the second period, and a three-pointer by Chelsea Thomas handed the Blue Angels an eight-point advantage, 29-21. Purchase scored five unanswered and narrowed the lead to 32-30 at halftime.
The second half saw back-and-forth action, and the lead changed hands three times in the third period. CNR was held to nine points in the third quarter and trailed, 45-41 entering the fourth.
New Rochelle dominated the fourth period, outscoring the Panthers by a margin of 18-8. King converted a three-point attempt with eight minutes to play, sparking a 7-0 run for CNR. Purchase held the margin to six points with two and a half minutes to play, but the Blue Angels held the visitors to a last-second layup as their only points down the stretch.
Brandon posted a double-double and led all players with 24 points and 18 rebounds in the CNR victory. King reached double figures with 12 points, while Amirror Dixon added 10 points and a team-high four assists.
Up next, the Panthers are set to host Yeshiva University in a Skyline Conference matchup on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
