Second-Half Surge Fuels First Win

Purchase, NY (Dec. 6, 2015) – The Purchase College women's basketball team notched its first win of the season, pulling past Yeshiva University in a 61-50 victory on Sunday.

Senior Elizabeth Osowiecki (Franklin Square, NY) led the Panthers (1-7, 1-1 Skyline) with a double-double, scoring 16 points and ripping down 12 rebounds in a game that went down to the wire. The standout forward shot 8-for-12 from the line while adding three assists, two blocks and two steals in 40 minutes of action.

Junior forward Sierra Sangetti-Daniels (Oneonta, NY) and sophomore Danielle Holmes (Warwick, NY) also provided double-double efforts, tallying a combined 23 points and 24 rebounds.  Junior Allison Haugh (New City, NY) rounded out the double-digit scoring with 15 total points.  Haugh also pulled down four rebounds, while totaling three assists and two steals in 33 minutes of play.

Junior guard April Uhl (Jackson Heights, NY) also had an impressive performance, totaling seven points, four rebounds and three assists.  She went 1-of-1 from behind the arc, netting the sole 3-point shot in the game for Purchase.

The Maccabees (0-6, 0-4 Skyline) were led by forward ace Julia Owen, who netted a game-high 23 points.  Teammate Michal Alge tallied a team-high 11 rebounds, four of which came on the offensive glass.

Purchase opened the game with a layup from Holmes but Yeshiva answered back quickly, going on a 4-0 run, including back-to-back jumpers from Owen.  Trailing by six points, Purchase rallied to take back the lead and end the opening quarter with a 13-8 advantage over the Maccabees.

Both teams exchanged leads in the second quarter but it was Purchase that came out on top, 24-21, to end the first half.

In the third quarter, Owens hit a 3-pointer followed by a jumper to tie the score at 26 apiece.  The score would tie two more but Yeshiva never claimed the lead again.  Each time the Maccabees shortened the deficit, the Panthers found a way to attack the basket and get to the foul line. The Panthers converted on 4-of-5 free-throws in the final three minutes to secure the win.

The Maccabees shot 21-of-78 (26.9 percent) from the floor while Purchase went 21-of-66 (31.8 percent). Yeshiva sank 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) shots from 3-point range and the Panthers shot 1-of-2 (50 percent).  The Maccabees committed 22 turnovers, while Purchase turned the ball over 20 times.

The Panthers' aggressive nature of attacking the basket created 29 trips to the foul line and they capitalized, knocking down 18 (62.1 percent) of the attempts. The Maccabees sank 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) shots at the charity stripe. Purchase's aggressiveness caused Yeshiva to commit 27 fouls. The Panthers were whistled for just 15 fouls.

Purchase continues the season this Tuesday with a 8 p.m. game against Skyline foe Farmingdale State.
