City Edges Purchase, 1-0

Purchase, NY (Sept. 11, 2015) – One early goal stood tall for the visiting City College of New York Friday night at Purchase.

Behind forward Kenan Redzematovic, the Beavers topped Purchase, 1-0.

A handball triggered a free kick for Redzematovic, who scored one minute and sixteen seconds into the game – his second goal of the early season.

The Panthers (1-4) had a couple of strong scoring opportunities at the outset, including a shot from rookie midfielder Yianni Amvrosiatos (FR/Warwick, NY) that went high above the goal. The rookie teamed once again with fellow newcomer Isaac Lee (FR/New York, NY) midway through the half on a free kick. This time, Lee curled a shot that was saved by City keeper Maxwell Berkow.

With under five minutes, Purchase flashed its best scoring chance of the half on a well-placed cross by midfielder/forward Matthew Ebel (SR/Miller Place, NY), which the Panthers were unable to convert on.

Purchase finished the first half with seven shots. City recorded eight in the opening period.

In the second half, the Panthers once again started strong as Rob Cal (FR/Port Jervis, NY) put a shot on goal that was saved.

Fouls plagued CCNY (2-2) throughout the game and provided additional chances for the Panthers. Thirteen minutes into the second half, Lee blasted a solid free kick on goal that was turned away. The strike was followed by two headers, both of which narrowly missed.

With five and a half minutes to go, a corner kick by Amvrosiatos was headed sharply by Denes Kostel (SO/New Hyde Park, NY), but Berkow made a key save to preserve the lead.

Both defenses and keepers shined on a night when goals were hard to come by. City's defense was sparked by defenders Valentino Lopez, Anthony Scarallo and Sted Haider. Berkow finished with six saves, while Panther goalie Esteban Aguilar (SR/East Hampton, NY) tallied four. Purchase defenders Samvara Anello (SR/Bali, Indonesia), Anthony Iurillo (SO/Flushing, NY) and forward Cal paced the hosts defensively.

Purchase held the advantage in shots (17-10) and corners (6-4).

In the end, the early goal was the difference.

Notes: Prior to the game, the Panthers remembered those lost on the 14-year anniversary of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, paying respects in a moment of silence before the National Anthem … Panther skipper James Bruno – a retired New York City fireman who won his first collegiate game as a college head coach three seasons ago on Sept. 11 – said although it's tough for him every year on the anniversary, that he is honored to play on a night of remembrance … The two non-conference locals have created a nice rivalry over the past few seasons, with Purchase defeating CCNY 2-1 in 2014 and the two clubs playing to a 3-3 draw in 2013.
