Purchase, NY
(Sept. 15, 2015) – A back-and-forth women's soccer matchup between the Panthers and the College of Staten Island came down to double overtime Tuesday night at Purchase.
After leading by a goal in the first and later tying the game in the second to force OT, Purchase found itself in a jam, drawing a foul right outside the 18, which triggered a free kick just two and a half minutes into the second OT.
On the free kick, CSI's Samantha Wysokowski lined the ball into the corner of the net for the game-winning goal, as the Dolphins escaped Purchase with a 3-2 win.
The victory improved CSI to 4-1 and dropped Purchase to 0-4 on the fall. The Panthers were coming off a 2-1 double OT loss to Manhattanville Friday night and have now lost three straight in OT.
Tuesday night was a see-saw affair from the start.
In the first half, Panther transfer
Riley Graham (JR/Red Bluff, CA), who is putting together a great start to the fall campaign, got Purchase on the board eight minutes into the contest.
The score, Graham's second of the season, was passed into the 18 by teammate
Nina Brennan (SO/Staten Island, NY). The terrific feed setup Graham, who smashed the ball past the keeper. CSI goalie Kristy Colangelo, a former Purchase player, came out on the play. The forward then shot it into the right post for a quick 1-0 advantage.
CSI countered seconds later with the game-tying strike off the foot of Wysokowski. Dolphin midfielder Danielle Alexandrini assisted on the goal.
It was a tightly contested first half on both sides, with the visitors holding a slight 8-7 margin in shots.
Panther keeper
Briana Leon (JR/Glen Cove, NY) was among the first half highlights for the hosts, making a handful of crisp saves to preserve the stalmate. She totaled five saves in the period.
In the second, it remained 1-1 until Lauren Smith gave CSI a 2-1 lead with 22 plus minutes to play.
However, the Panthers showed their mettle and Graham provided the game-tying strike off an assist from
Emily Saltman (SO/Huntington, NY) just inside 11 minutes.
That's where the game would stand, despite a couple of good chances on both sides, including another near goal from Graham in regulation and a nice look by
Cristina de Jesus (SR/Purchase, NY) in the first of the extra periods.
The same could be said for CSI, which also had its chances in OT. Purchase outshot CSI 28-18, but the critical foul setup the free kick and provided the game-winning opportunity the Dolphins were searching for.
Leon finished with nine saves for Purchase. Colangelo totaled 11 in the win for the Dolphins.
Purchase returns to action Thursday at Brooklyn.
