Panthers Open Road Schedule in Potsdam Cup

Drop Pair to Potsdam, Plattsburgh

Canton, NY (Sept. 5-6, 2015) – The Purchase College men's soccer team took part in the Potsdam Cup over the holiday weekend, with the hosts and eventual champion Potsdam earning a 4-0 victory and Plattsburgh State capturing a 4-1 win.

In the opening loss to Potsdam, junior forward Ritchie Hetherington and freshman midfielder Jorge Ferrer scored their first goals as Bears, while seniors Ben Firlit and Stephen Auyer also found the back of the net.

The Bears controlled the play for much of the first half, but didn't get on the board until just before the break.

Potsdam outshot Purchase 22-4 in the contest, though the Panthers finished with a 6-3 advantage in corners.

Bears junior goalkeeper Nick Davies made two saves in 76:52 to earn his program-best 16th career victory.

Purchase goalie Esteban Aguilar (SR/East Hampton, NY) stopped six shots and allowed all four goals in the first 64:56 and Uriel Milechberg Chirom (SR/Buenos Aires, Argentina) made four saves in the last 24:04.

Sunday, Plattsburgh topped Panthers 4-1, despite another valiant effort from the visitors.

Alexis Archilla broke the scoreless tie 31 minutes in, when Fabian Chaparro sent a pass across the box to a wide open Archilla.

Plattsburgh's Terrence Spence scored his first goals as a Cardinal minutes apart to give the team a 3-0 lead heading into the break.

Plattsburgh controlled the majority of play, holding a 22–7 advantage in shots and a 7–2 advantage in corner kicks.

Chris Bowden netted the final goal of the game for Plattsburgh.

Plattsburgh goalie Mitchell Jordon made one save in earning the win. Aguilar made six saves for the Panthers in the losing effort.

Matthew Ebel (SR/Miller Place, NY) got Purchase on the board in the 71st minute, when he received a pass from Nick Ishoo (SR/Tarrytown, NY) and beat Jordon near post for their first goal of the tournament.

Ebel and standout defender Anthony Iurillo (SO/Flushing, NY) were named to the all-tournament team.

"Matt was our most dangerous offensive threat," explained Panther head coach James Bruno, adding, "although we allowed too many goals, Anthony Iurillo was great and made a ton of defensive stops.

"Potsdam and Plattsburgh are two strong teams that will do well in the SUNYAC," Bruno noted. "The SUNYAC is one of the best DIII soccer conferences in the country. It was a great experience for our program to play tough opponents like Potsdam and Plattsburgh on the road. It was also great to see a guy like Chris Waterbury, head coach for Plattsburgh for 31 years, operate."

In recap of the tournament, Hobart College forward Jacob Fox scored with one minute left to help the Statesmen down Potsdam 2-1 in the second round of the 2015 Potsdam College Cup. Both teams are now 2-1 on the season.

With the win over Purchase, Plattsburgh (3-0) retained the cup title.

Cardinal senior midfielder Chaparro was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
