Winners of Five of Six in 2016

Bronxville, NY (Jan. 20, 2016) – Purchase jumped back into the win column Wednesday night at Sarah Lawrence.

The Panthers topped the host Gryphons 66-58. SLC led by as many as 10 points but were unable to hold off the charging Panthers at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center. In the win, Purchase is now 9-8 overall and 7-5 in the Skyline Conference standings, dropping SLC to 3-14, 1-12.

Both teams had trouble getting going, and after six minutes of play, both had missed five shots en route to a 7-7 deadlock.

SLC rookie Gabe Eng turned things around with a successful 3-pointer and added another at the midpoint of the half, giving the Gryphons an 18-12 advantage. With eight minutes remaining, Eng drained a pair of 3s 37 seconds apart, sparking a 7-0 run to give the Gryphons their largest lead, 25-15.

Nonetheless, feisty Purchase whittled the lead to three-points, 32-29, at halftime.

In the opening minutes of the second, SLC started strong and the lead returned to five points.

But Purchase battled back and went on a run of its own for a 45-39 advantage. SLC then made made back-to-back 3s with just under eight minutes to play, tying the game at 47-47.

With five and a half minutes left, the game was still deadlocked, 51-51.

From there, the Panthers went on a 5-0 run that proved to be enough.

The visitors went to the foul line 24 times in the period and converted on 17 attempts, including four in the last 20 seconds of play.

Panther center Joel Neri (SR/Port Chester, NY) led all players with 17 points and 14 rebounds, notching his seventh double-double of the season. Michael Pelham (JR/Spring Valley, NY) (13 points), Taylor Foster (SR/Greenburgh, NY) (12 points) and Max Pearce (SO/Tuckahoe, NY) (11 points) all scored in double-figures.

Graham Gilleran, Parker Hagmaier and Eng each scored a dozen points to lead SLC. Hagmaier finished with an Gryphon-best 11 rebounds.

The Panthers have won five of six in 2016 and six of their last seven games since December. The team is currently in fourth in the league standings.
