Purchase, NY
(Jan. 28, 2016) – New Purchase head coach
Antonia Sweet knows how to make an entrance.
The volleyball skipper guided her Panthers to a 3-0 sweep of Brooklyn College Thursday night at home.
The men's volleyball team started the Sweet era on a high note, topping the non-conference Bulldogs in straight sets to improve to 1-0 overall.
It was a sound victory for Purchase over its CUNY rival, a team they also defeated last season, but one that looked much improved. The same could be said for Purchase, which looked energized under Sweet in the team's home and season opener – a meeting that was postponed Monday by the weekend blizzard and rescheduled to tonight.
The Panthers took the opening set in convincing fashion 25-16 before closing the victory in 25-22 and 25-23 set finals – second and third sets, respectively that featured plenty of good back-and-forth rallies and each team trading leads.
Brooklyn (0-4), which started the season in St. Louis, Missouri playing against powerhouse opponents on the road, kept pace throughout the match, but ultimately, Purchase's strong serve and late rallies prevailed.
Sweet took over the program upon the departure of
Tom Callahan and has also been hired as the new women's volleyball head coach at Purchase, replacing interim coach
Albana Krasniqi, who also stepped down.
The Panthers got contributions from top to bottom. Starters
Andrew Schwab (JR/Merrick, NY),
Kevin Carges (JR/Brockport, NY),
Matthew McCarthy (SR/Fayetteville, NY),
Austin Lynch (FR/Verona, NY),
Luke Kubisch (FR/Delmar, NY) and
Riley Damerell (JR/Rochester, NY) set the tone. Key reserves
Christopher Williams (SO/Valley Stream, NY),
Griffin Rapp (SO/Rochester, NY) and
Andy Tang (SO/Brooklyn, NY) also performed well in the win.
Carges led the way offensively, totaling 13 kills and three aces to go along with six digs and two blocks. Damerell followed with six kills and a team-high 16 assists and seven digs. Schwab added 10 assists and four digs in the win.
Brooklyn was paced by Vaughn Titus and his match-high 14 kills. Ian Miranda also contributed two aces, five blocks and four digs in the loss.
