(Dec. 3, 2016) – A final-second free throw made the difference in the Purchase College women's basketball 60-59 setback at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in a Skyline Conference contest Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops Purchase to 2-4 overall (1-1 SKY), while the Mariners improve to 2-2 (1-1 SKY) with the win.
USMMA freshman Kaleigh D'Arcy netted the final go-ahead point after a Purchase foul sent her to the line with five seconds left in the fourth quarter.
D'Arcy recorded a game-high 20 points and brought down 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. Senior teammate Rachel Wehlburg recorded 10 second-half points to finish the game with 12 points, to go along with five rebounds. Freshman Shelby Peters led all players in the game with 15 rebounds, while also contributing six points for Merchant Marine.
Three players scored in double-figures for Purchase, led by junior
Kayla Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY) with 16 points. Sophomore
Amber Jones (Bronx, NY) contributed 15 points with a team-high eight rebounds and senior
Frances Minaya (San Fernando, CA) also had 15 points in the losing effort.
Purchase is back in action on Tuesday as the Panthers get set to host Mount Saint Mary College in a Skyline matchup starting at 6 p.m.
