(Feb. 12, 2016) – Purchase volleyball made quick work of Pratt Institute Friday night at home, sweeping the Cannoneers, 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-12).
Backed by solid team play, the Panthers came out strong in the opening set, coasting to the easy win. That success carried over into the second set before Pratt had an early lead in the third. Purchase rebounded in the finale to seal the sweep.
The evening was a win-win on and off the floor for the Panthers, who dedicated the game to longtime
supervisors Vic Donato and
Sam Pugliese.
The two were acknowledged in a brief pre-match ceremony during introductions. New
Purchase head coach Antonia Sweet and the team presented the two with chocolates and flowers on Valentine's weekend.
Kevin Carges (JR/Brockport, NY),
Matthew McCarthy (SR/Fayetteville, NY) and
Christopher Williams (SO/Valley Stream, NY) paced Purchase offensively, totaling eight, six and six kills, respectively. McCarthy added five aces and 10 digs – both match highs.
Andrew Schwab (JR/Merrick, NY) led the way in two categories; he posted a match-high two blocks and a match-best 21 assists.
Griffin Rapp (SO/Rochester, NY),
Austin Lynch (FR/Verona, NY) and
Luke Kubisch (FR/Delmar, NY) also excelled in the well-rounded team victory.
Pratt was led by David Cutler and his match-high nine kills to go along with eight digs. Brandon Ryan added nine assists in the loss.
In the non-conference win, Purchase improved to 4-5 overall. Pratts falls to 1-1 on the season.
