Purchase, NY
(March 15, 2016) –Manhattanville defeated Purchase 18-3 Tuesday in a single, nine-inning, non-conference game.
The neighboring Valiants traveled over to the Purchase campus for the 4 p.m. start, improving to 4-5 in the win. The loss dropped Purchase to 4-6.
Manhattanville opened with six runs in the top half of the first. The Valiants reeled off four straight hits and finished the inning with seven, including a two-RBI triple by Luke Scoggins. A batter earlier, Manhattanville designated hitter Chris Lattarulo had a two-RBI single to make it 3-0. Scoggins increased the lead to 5-0. The Valiants handed starter John Moschetti a six-run, first-inning lead.
The Panthers stranded a runner at third in the bottom of the first. Two hard-hit shots – a liner from
William Kaul (SR/Eastchester, NY) that was snarled by the first baseman and a shot to the left-field fence by
Patrick Rucci (JR/Cortlandt Manor, NY) that was caught on the run by the left fielder – were among the defensive highlights for the visitors, keeping the early shutout intact.
Kaul returned the favor in the top of the second, making a terrific running grab in center for the second out of the inning, but the Valiants managed to plate two more in the frame. Both runs came with two outs, as John Delahanty and Scoggins strung together back-to-back hits. Following Delahanty's RBI single, Scoggins added a double and a third RBI to his line in the box score for the eight-run lead.
The Panthers scored a run in the second and two in the third. A sac bunt by
Gregory Walsh (FR/Bethpage, NY) plated Purchase's first run.
Kaul tripled to right field, scoring
Brenden LaPorte (SR/Farmington, CT) to start the third, as Purchase cut it to 9-2. Four-hitter
Mathew Chavez (SR/Brooklyn, NY) followed with an RBI single to score Kaul, but that is as close as the Panthers would get.
The Valiants scored a single run in the third and broke it open with five in the fifth before closing the game with three in the seventh and a single run in the eighth. They used five pitchers in the win. Moschetti recorded the victory.
Purchase used six pitchers, including starter
Christopher Dreier (SO/Mahopac, NY), who took the loss.
Manhattanville was led offensively by Scoggins, who finished with six RBI. Teammate Jordanis Nunez went 3-for5 with three runs and three RBI.
Kaul, Chavez and Walsh paced Purchase, each recording RBIs in the loss. They also accounted for three of the team's seven hits.
The Panthers will now have a quick turnaround. Purchase travels to Lehman College Wednesday for more non-conference action before gearing up for their Florida Spring Break trip this weekend.
