Undefeated Panthers Sweep Conference Opener

Purchase, NY (March 18, 2016) - Purchase softball celebrated the first day of Spring Break in style, taking both ends of its Skyline Conference-opening twin bill against Yeshiva University Friday afternoon at home.

The undefeated Panthers rolled to 4-0 today, winning the opener 12-0 in five innings, and game two 8-0 in five innings. Purchase needed the bottom half of the fifth inning in game two to seal the sweep, as leadoff hitter Lisa Kentris (FR/Latham, NY) plated the walk-off single to deliver the sweep.

In game one, Purchase, fresh off its season-opening doubleheader sweep of Baruch College at home last weekend, reeled off four runs in the bottom of the first. Panther ace Samantha Alonzo (SR/Wappingers Falls, NY) sent Purchase into the dugout with one scoreless inning already on the board. She then proceeded to double in the game's first run.

But the big blow of the inning - and the game - came off the bat of returning All-Skyline selection Shannon Clancy (SO/Babylon, NY). The outfielder blasted a two-run home run over the fence and made it 3-0. An infield error closed the inning at 4-0.

Purchase scored a single run in the second and three more in the third before capping the scoring with a four-spot in the fourth.

Tara Stiansen (SR/Hampton Bays, NY) accounted for the run in the third on an RBI bunt single.

Antonina Fiore (SO/Mount Sinai, NY) and Kentris highlighted the third, recording RBI hits in the frame. Fiore also added an RBI single in the fourth before Kentris put the finishing touches in the fourth on a two-RBI double.

That was plenty for Alonzo. The starter improved to 2-0, allowing one hit over four innings. She struck out eight in the victory. Kentris came on and pitched a scoreless top of the fifth to end the game.

Five Panther hitters tallied two hits in game one, including the first three batters in the order (Kentris, Stiansen and Briana Leon (JR/Glen Cove, NY)).

YU's Michal Alge had the lone hit in the opening loss and the only hit for the Maccabees in game two.

In game two, the Panthers scored a run in the first, two in the second and four in the third. They left the bases loaded in the fourth before closing the game on Kentris' walk-off winner in the fifth.

A groundout by Leon plated Kentris for a quick 1-0 lead in the first.

Fiore continued her hot hitting in the doubleheader in the second. She doubled and plated rookie Kelly Hayes (FR/Staten Island, NY) to start the second. Starting pitcher Nicole Fortuna (JR/New Rochelle, NY) singled and scored Fiore for a 3-0 advantage. Next inning, Leon and Alonzo followed with RBIs as Purchase broke it open.

In the finale, Leon went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Purchase smashed 10 hits in game two, including two apiece from Kentris, Stiansen and Hayes.

Fortuna went the distance to improve to 2-0. She struck out seven, walked one and allowed one hit.

YU's Rachel Mirsky took the hill again in game two and fell to 1-4.

The Panthers return to action Sunday at Farmingdale State.
