Dominant Home-Opening Win for Women’s Lax

Rich Scores Five Goals in Victory

Purchase, NY (March 19, 2016) – Purchase women's lacrosse debuted its 2016 roster at home Saturday, returning to the campus following two road games to start the spring campaign.

The Panthers look primed for another long playoff run, dispatching Maine Maritime Academy 16-4 in an impressive non-conference victory. Purchase (2-1), which opened the season in a split, has now won two straight. The Panthers defeated Moravian on the road Thursday and kept it up against the Mariners today at home.

Purchase reeled off nine straight goals for a 9-0 advantage at halftime. Emma Porter (SO/Homer, NY) scored the game's first strike and was followed by three straight from Zoe Hines (SO/Maplewood, NJ), who was fresh off a five-goal game Thursday. Samantha Rich (SR/Providence, RI) added three goals before the half was up, while Nathalie Lavelanet (SR/South Salem, NY) and Maria Papp (SR/White Plains, NY) collected the other goals in the first 30 minutes.

Maine Maritime recorded four second-half goals, but couldn't get closer than 10-2.

The Panthers took full control over the final 30 minutes as Rich finished with five goals for the game. Hines added four on the afternoon, while Porter, Papp and
Kelly Turtell (SO/Farmingdale, NY) chipped in two apiece. Porter added four assists and Rich and Turtell recorded one each in the win.

MMA was led offensively by Briana Obshatkin (two goals), Christina Wilson (one goal) and Morgan Maxwell (one goal).

The loss dropped the Mariners to 0-3.

The Panthers held the advantage in shots (29-16), ground balls (17-14) and draw controls (17-2).

In addition to the offensive outburst, Purchase was led defensively by Kelsey Straub (JR/White Plains, NY), Lexie Stodden (SR/Monroe, NY), Daniella Martins (SO/Mahopac, NY) and goalie Cynthia Plackis (SO/East Northport, NY). Fellow starters Virginia Redlon (SO/Carmel, NY) and Danielle Sarubbi (FR/Brooklyn, NY) also played well in the win, while the bench saw time in the closing minutes of the dominant victory.

The Panthers will look to make it three straight Wednesday, when Purchase travels to Massachusetts Maritime Academy for a 7 p.m. matchup.
