Women’s Lax Reels Off Third Straight Win, Downs Centenary

Five Goals for Hines, Three Each from Smith, Rich, Porter and Turtell in 19-7 Rout

Purchase, NY (March 25, 2016) - Purchase and Centenary were tied at a goal each in the opening minutes Friday afternoon before the Panthers broke out and scored eight straight en route to an overwhelming 19-7 final to close Spring Break in the win column.

The Panthers dropped their season opener at Merchant Marine, but have not lost since, putting together three consecutive victories. Today's matinee featured five goals from Zoe Hines (SO/Maplewood, NJ) and three each from four others.

Purchase is now 3-1.

Hines opened the scoring on an unassisted tally, but Centenary answered back on a goal by Abby Voelkner. Kelly Turtell (SO/Farmingdale, NY), who would finish with three goals on the afternoon, gave the lead back to the Panthers and then padded it with an assist to Hines for her 14th goal of the season. Hines scored again shortly after and then Madi Smith (SO/Lagrangeville, NY) found the back of the net for her first goal of the spring.

Smith is coming off an injury, but showed no signs of it, scoring three goals on the day.

Standout newcomer Emma Porter (SO/Homer, NY) followed with an unassisted score at 11:18. Smith then added her second and third goals of the day for an 8-1 advantage.

The Panthers played a man down right after, but still managed to increase the lead to 9-1 on a score by tri-captain Samantha Rich (SR/Providence, RI).

The Cyclones (3-5) got one back courtesy of Carlie Schmitt on an assist from Devin Sutko (05:16).

The half closed with Purchase leading 9-2.

In the second, Hines picked up where she left off in the first, scoring again for her 16th of the season. Turtell and then Rich followed minutes apart before Rich added her third and final score of the afternoon (22:27) - her 10th of the season.

Turtell capped her day with an unassisted goal and a commanding 14-2 margin at 17:21.

Centenary fought hard and scored back-to-back, as Kristen Rabenstein notched two straight.

But Hines, Porter - twice more - and goals from Daniella Martins (SO/Mahopac, NY) and Annette Elson (JR/Las Vegas, NY) put the finishing touches on the victory.

Rabenstein would add her third goal and Sutko and Voelkner recorded goals in the final minutes. Rabenstein would pace the Cyclones with three on the afternoon. Voelkner followed with two on the day.

Elson's goal was the final of the afternoon for Purchase. After she entered from the bench, she immediately attacked the goal and scored on a beautiful, spinning sprint to the circle.

Purchase held advantages in shots (38-20) and ground balls (17-9). The Cyclones won the draw control battle (14-13), but the Panthers forced 13 turnovers from the visitors.

Panther keeper Cynthia Plackis (SO/East Northport, NY) improved to 3-1 in net. She stopped nine shots in the win.
