Panthers Compete on Day Two of Collegiate Classic

Fort Myers, FL (March 21, 2016) – The Purchase baseball team went 0-2 on day two of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, FL.  The Panthers opened the day with a 3-0 loss to Millikin University and later suffered an 11-4 defeat to Saint John's University (MN).

Millikin jump ahead in the first inning on three straight singles by Seth Coffey, Julian Gutierrez and Devin Crews.  The Big Blue scored twice in the fifth.  Andrew Huss started the inning with a double and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Coffey.  Millikin's final run came on a Gutierrez sacrifice bunt RBI scoring Anthony Rendina.

Coffey and Gutierrez each had two hits for the Big Blue.

Millikin got a strong pitching performance limiting Purchase to just two hits.  Freshman Adam Zuk picked up his first collegiate victory throwing six and two-thirds innings allowing two hits while striking out six.  John Fisher threw one and one-third innings of hitless relief.

Purchase opened up the scoring with a RBI groundout from Patrick Rucci (JR/Cortlandt Manor, NY) in the top of the second inning.

Saint John's answered the Panthers' run with six runs in the bottom half, including three consecutive on a walk and two hit batsmen with the bases loaded.

Freshman outfielder Max Jackson and junior third baseman Derek Schiebel tallied three RBI at the top two spots in the lineup.    

Sophomore Nick Noack went eight innings in his first collegiate start on the mound, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

Up next, the Panthers are set to take the field against the University of Wisconsin (Platteville) tomorrow starting at 9 a.m.
