Men’s Volleyball Back on Track in Win Over CSI

Purchase, NY (March 9, 2016) - Winners of three of the last four, the Purchase College men's volleyball team bounced back from a non-conference loss last time out to top the visiting College of Staten Island Wednesday night at home.

The Panthers defeated CSI, 3-1, winning the match 25-22, 26-28, 25-17, 25-20.

Purchase, which had its mini win streak snapped Monday night at John Jay, recovered against the Dolphins in another non-conference matchup with a rival CUNY school. The Panthers improved to 10-11 in the victory, dropping CSI to 4-13.

Despite their record, the Dolphins were feisty in the loss, but the combination of Riley Damerell (JR/Rochester, NY), Matthew McCarthy (SR/Fayetteville, NY) and Christopher Williams (SO/Valley Stream, NY) provided exactly what Purchase needed offensively. The trio accounted for 38 kills combined, with Damerell and McCarthy recording 15 and 14, respectively.

Setter Andrew Schwab (JR/Merrick, NY) turned in arguably his best match of the season with family in attendance. He posted a match-high 41 assists. He added two blocks and did a nice job spreading out the offense in his setting duties.

Damerell starred offensively and defensively, leading the charge with 23 digs on the defensive end. McCarthy was equally superb, recording 21 digs. Austin Lynch (FR/Verona, NY) added 20 digs of his own as Purchase put together a tremendous defensive effort against the resilient Dolphins.

The evening was marked by long volleys and sets, with the first set nearly going the distance, the second seeing extra points and the third and fourth sets decided by eight and five points, respectively.

CSI was led by Justin Edwardsen, who finished with a team-high 10 kills and 20 digs. Dolphin setter Adil El Haddad added 27 assists in the loss.
