Baseball Stays Perfect in Conference, Sweeps CMSV

Purchase, NY (April 2, 2016) – Panther baseball regrouped from an early rain delay and posted a pair of Skyline Conference wins against the College of Mount Saint Vincent at home Saturday.

The twin bill was originally slated for an 11 a.m. start, but the games were moved to 2 p.m. due to rains in the area. Although it would rain on and off throughout the day, especially in game two, the Panthers looked sharp in both ends of a league sweep, taking the opener 11-1 in a shortened seven innings and posting a 10-4 game-two victory.

Purchase is now 8-12 overall, including 3-0 in league play. The losses drop CMSV to 2-11 and 0-2.

The Panthers started strong in the opener, scoring one run in the first and three more in the second for a 4-0 lead. William Kaul (SR/Eastchester, NY) singled and plated Brenden LaPorte (SR/Farmington, CT) for the game's first run. LaPorte, who advanced to third on the hit, scored on an error.

Kaul followed in the second and smashed another single – this time to center – for an RBI, as Gregory Walsh (FR/Bethpage, NY) scored. Teofilo Ramirez (JR/Queens, NY) drove home two on a single to left for the four-run lead.

Purchase pushed the lead to seven runs in the third inning, scoring three more times. The frame was highlighted by an RBI fielder's choice by Kaul, a steal of home by Ronald Pressley (JR/Bronx, NY) and a passed ball that brought home Kaul for the 7-0 margin. Purchase scored a single run in the sixth and three more in the sixth en route to the conference run-rule win (10 run lead after seven innings).

Pressley, Mathew Chavez (SR/Brooklyn, NY), Brian Cunningham (FR/Westbury, NY) and Nick Tuozzola (FR/Milford, CT) recorded the final four RBI.

CMSV scratched across an unearned run in the fifth.

Purchase starter Miguel Reyes (JR/Bronx, NY) went seven innings, striking out four and walking three. He scattered three hits and one unearned run in the victory.

Dolphins starter Evan Brown, one of three pitchers used in game one by the visitors, took the loss. He pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing six runs, four earned.

Kaul paced the Purchase offense in the opener, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Ramirez, who made some stellar plays in the field at shortstop, including a pair of defensive gems that persevered both games, added two RBIs.

While Reyes improved to 2-1 in the opener, Panther game-two starter Lukas Chin (SO/Spring Valley, NY) rolled to 4-0 in the victory. He went five innings and allowed four earned, striking out four. He was nearly perfect until a rainy fifth, where he surrendered three of his four runs as the Dolphins tried to mount a comeback.

The Panthers led 7-0 after two innings.

Chavez tripled to left and scored a red-hot Kaul to kick start game two in the first. Cunningham, having a nice rookie campaign, singled and scored Chavez to cap the scoring in the opening inning.

Kaul recorded an RBI to start the second and Ramirez continued his hot play as well. He lined a two-RBI single right after. The Panthers manufactured two more runs and would later rally after the Dolphins posted three in the fifth. At that stretch, CMSV had scored four runs from the third to the fifth before the Panthers finished off the impressive win with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Patrick Rucci (JR/Cortlandt Manor, NY) tripled and plated Cunningham in the fifth. Gerard Fraracci (JR/Queens, NY) singled and scored Rucci. Pressley then singled to left for an RBI, plating Fraracci.

Kaul was the leading man again offensively in game two, recording two of the team's nine hits. Ramirez led the way with two RBI.

For CMSV, the visitors were paced by Matt Nesesohn, who went 2-for-4 with one run. Steven Giustino had two RBI, while Keith Brodesser and Craig Weber added one RBI apiece.
