Women's Soccer Opens League Action With a 5-0 Sweep Over Sarah Lawrence

Purchase, NY (Sept. 13, 2016) – Purchase College relied on four first-half goals and a strong defensive effort to top Sarah Lawrence College, 5-0, in the women's soccer Skyline Conference opener for both teams Tuesday evening.

With the win, the Panthers advance to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the Skyline while the Gryphons fall to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Four different players scored for the Panthers, highlighted by a two-goal effort from Brett Robison (FR/Franklin Square, NY). Nina Brennan (JR/Staten Island, NY) netted the first goal for Purchase, assisted by senior Amanda Green (Roslyn Heights, NY), after seven minutes of action.  Green went on to score the second goal at 19:40, assisted by Emma Porter (JR/Homer, NY).  Robison rounded out the scoring in the first half with an unassisted shot at 24:37 and her second, assisted by junior forward Emily Saltman (Huntington, NY), at 40:05.

Saltman scored the fifth and final goal of the game off a corner kick taken by Green in the 68th minute.

Amidst a flurry of Panther offense, the Gryphons had several key offensive chances. In the first half, the Gryphons drew a foul about 25 yards from the goal. Sophomore Sophia Spralja fired a direct kick shot but the effort was broken up by Purchase keeper Rachel Mizrahi (JR/Goldens Bridge, NY). In the second half, sophomore Grace Euphrat received a crossing pass and pulled the trigger. Her shot was also met by the veteran Panther goalie Briana Leon (SR/Glen Cove, NY). The final opportunity came late in the game, when rookie Jordynn Figueroa served up a corner kick on the offensive end.

Mizrahi (1-3) and Leon each tallied one save over 45 minutes in net, while Sarah Lawrence keeper Rachell Mosquera (0-2) had a season-high 11 saves for the Gryphons.

The Panthers return to their home field this Saturday for a Skyline Conference game against the SUNY College at Old Westbury at noon.
