Purchase, NY
(Oct. 11, 2017) – Backed by two first-period goals, the College of Mount Saint Vincent edged Purchase College, 3-2, on a rainy Wednesday night.
The Dolphins started strong, scoring two goals over the first 45 minutes. Dolphin forward Julia McGowan accounted for both goals, scoring in the 38th and the 43rd minute, respectively. The first came off an assist from Emma Dell'Aquilla on a cross, while the second was unassisted and booted from 25 yards out. She now has five goals on the year.
Undeterred, the Panthers kept pace with a terrific strike from newcomer forward
Cerissa DiValentino (FR/New Paltz, NY). Her 10th of the season was unassisted and came in the final seconds of the first, cutting the deficit right in half.
The skies opened at game time and a steady mist continued on and off throughout the game, sometimes heavier than other times, but both programs pushed forward on a soggy evening of soccer on the turf.
DiValentino nearly tied the game early in the second half, just missing the equalizer.
She then rebounded with another outstanding attempt, this time finding the back of the net on a 1v1 goal to knot the game at 2-2. Her 11th of the season sent the Purchase faithful, which included a large contingent of the Panther baseball team into a frenzy. The game-tying goal came in the 59th minute.
But CMSV responded quickly, answering the goal with a goal of its own. Erin Dailey scored her fourth of the season from 15 yards out, as the Dolphins recaptured the advantage.
The visitors would hold on over the final 27 minutes.
In the win, CMSV improved to 4-7 overall, including 3-2 in league play. The loss drops the Panthers to 4-7 on the fall and 2-3 in conference.
