Patchogue, NY
(Oct. 14, 2017) – Tri-captain
Kayode Tyler gave Purchase a late, second-half lead, but host St. Joseph's College-LI rallied with the game-tying score in regulation and then won the game in overtime, 2-1.
SJC-LI's Justin Busto scored less than four minutes into OT as the hosts earned a dramatic come-from-behind victory at Danzi Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Golden Eagles, who remain atop the Skyline Conference standings with a 6-0-1 mark, extend their unbeaten streak to seven games and improve to 6-5-1 on the year. Purchase is now 6-7-1 overall, including 3-2-1 in the Skyline.
The winner came off a right-sided cross by Damian Duda, who saw his service clipped by the Purchase keeper, but a waiting Busto was positioned on the doorstep and finished off his second game-winning goal of the year.
The Panthers tallied the game's opening goal in the 49th minute when Tyler (SR/Nyack, NY) converted a penalty attempt shortly after the break.
Purchase carried the play over the next 20 minutes, but as regulation time ran down, the Golden Eagles ramped up the pressure and finally found an equalizer in the 88th minute.
After a free-kick attempt just outside the box to the left of the Purchase goal, Robert Gomez played a cross into the box where a waiting John Alves used his head to knot the score up at one.
SJC-LI's Mike Paterson made eight saves in his first-career victory, while Purchase's
Jordan Meade (FR/Olivebridge, NY) was credited with six saves.
