(Oct. 14, 2017) – The Purchase College women's tennis team lost a close match Saturday afternoon, falling to Bard College, 5-4.
Bard sophomore MacKenzie Wardell won a third set tiebreaker at No. 3 single to give the home team the win.
Bard (3-7 overall) held a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the event. Purchase (6-6 overall) picked up its doubles win at the No. 3 spot. The Panther duo of
Nadia Shadi (JR/New York, NY) and
Amelia Rothbell (FR/Plainedge, NY) defeated Elizabeth Nicholson and Kristi Kordas, 8-3.
In singles, Bard's Katie Esposito and Amelia Tiemann won at No. 1 & 2, respectively, but Purchase won at 4, 5 and 6. That left it up to Wardell, who was locked in a battle with Purchase junior
Abigail Cuddy (Mount Kisco, NY) at No. 3. Wardell won the first set, 6-1, and Cuddy won the second set, 6-1.
Wardell pulled it out, 7-6, in the third set, winning the tiebreaker, 7-2.
The match wrapped up the fall portion of the 2017-18 season for Purchase. With a .500 overall record and 3-3 in the Skyline Conference, the Panthers advance to the league's postseason. The No. 4 Purchase will take on the No. 1 Yeshiva University on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
