(Oct. 17, 2017) – The Purchase College women's volleyball team pushed visiting Baruch College nearly to the distance Tuesday night, but the Bearcats survived a late rally to hold on in four sets.
Purchase (0-15) outlasted the visitors 27-25 in the opening set, but Baruch won the second and the third set 25-13 and 25-20, respectively. Despite a late fourth set lead by Purchase, the Bearcats rallied for a 26-24 win to seal the match. Baruch is now 10-12 on the fall.
Baruch was led by Wai Chang and her eight kills. Stella Chung added seven. Katherine Chen paced the team with two blocks and 20 assists, leading the way defensively and in the passing game. Chung added 19 digs to spark the defensive effort.
Maura Gribbins (JR/Buffalo, NY),
Kaitlyn Pillig (JR/Mamaroneck, NY) and
Alex Lally (SR/Mesquite, TX) were the team leaders for Purchase offensively. Gribbins recorded a match-high 12 kills. Pillig also finished in double figures with 10. Lally tallied four in the loss, while adding one block and a match-high 22 assists. Gribbins not only shined offensively, but also defensively, where she turned in a match-high 29 digs.
Although Purchase narrowly lost, it was among the best performances on the fall for the team, especially defensively, where Pillig and Lally netted 26 and 25 digs, respectively, combining with Gribbins for 80 between the trio.
